Tears, Rubble, and Sympathy: Kenyans Mourn Mombasa Tycoon’s KSh 350M Loss After KDF Demolishes Building

Mombasa, Kenya – A cloud of dust and heartbreak settled over Mombasa on April 9, 2025, after the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) brought down a multi-million-shilling nine-storey building. The structure, located along Abdel Nasser Road, had shown signs of sinking just days earlier, prompting a swift and painful demolition.

A Fortune Reduced to Rubble

Former Embakasi South MP Irshad Sumra, speaking on behalf of the developer, confirmed that the building cost between KSh 300 million and KSh 350 million. As he addressed the media, his voice carried the weight of devastation.

“After investing a significant fortune both financially and, above all, emotionally, it is a moment of great distress for all of us involved,” he said.
“We humbly ask for understanding, support, and prayers. This is a challenging time for everybody, including the developer, the neighbours, and Mombasa residents.”

KDF Steps In, Explosives Used

Following reports that the building had begun sinking on April 2, the Mombasa County Government, led by Governor Abdulswamad Sheriff Nassir, ordered an evacuation within a 1.2-kilometre radius.

The situation demanded urgency. As a result, a multi-agency team, including KDF personnel, police, emergency units, and structural engineers, supervised the evacuation and demolition. Explosives were used to bring the unstable structure down safely.

Gratitude Amid Grief

Despite the enormous loss, Sumra took a moment to thank all those who responded.

“We are grateful to the emergency teams, the Kenya Army, the Muslim Kumbah Jamaat, and Governor Abdulswamad for their swift response,” he stated.

Kenyans Show Overwhelming Sympathy

As news broke online, Kenyans flooded social media with sympathy and solidarity. Many were stunned by the financial loss, while others added humor to cope with the shock.

Mamutash tweeted: “He lost KSh 350M and still read a statement? I lost KSh 3,000 and landed in hospital.”
Jezebel asked: “Can we set up a Paybill and refund this guy? He’s going through a lot.”

Others like Kisii Plug and Kimzs Kimcho pointed out that this wasn’t the developer’s first tragic loss, referencing Taj Mall’s demolition in Nairobi.

Tragedy Within Tragedy: One Dead

Adding to the heartbreak, a young businessman died in the incident. CCTV footage confirmed he entered the doomed building moments before demolition. His family mourns, stunned by the sudden, tragic end.

More Than a Building

This story is about more than bricks and cement. It’s about dreams crushed, a community in grief, and a nation asking, what went wrong?
