Tragedy in the Skies: Two Kenya Air Force Pilots Killed in Kwale Plane Crash
A dark cloud hangs over Kenya’s military after two Kenya Air Force officers tragically died on Saturday, June 14, in a plane crash in Ndavaya, Kinango, Kwale County. The aircraft, a Grob 120A, was on a routine training flight before it went down in an open field near Mwakijembe Primary School.
KDF Confirms the Incident
In a press statement released the same day, the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) confirmed that the aircraft experienced an emergency shortly after takeoff.
“Earlier today, 14th June 2025, a Kenya Air Force Grob 120A aircraft experienced an emergency while on a training flight in the general area of Mwakijembe Primary School, Ndavaya, Kwale County,” read part of the statement.
“On board were two pilots. Recovery is ongoing,” KDF added.
Despite confirming the pilots’ presence on board, KDF did not initially disclose their condition. However, Kwale County Commissioner Stephen Orinde later confirmed the heartbreaking news — both officers had died on the spot.
Crash Details and Wreckage
Flight tracking data showed the aircraft departed from Mombasa at 11:39 a.m., last appearing on radar near Diani before vanishing. By 12:06 p.m., just 27 minutes after takeoff, the flight had crashed.
Images obtained by Kenyans.co.ke from the crash site showed the plane dismembered, with its cockpit ripped apart and only the seats remaining. The nose of the aircraft was reduced to shattered parts, pointing to a possible nose-dive impact.
In contrast, the tail section had minimal damage, strengthening speculation that the aircraft plunged front-first.
Area Residents and Emergency Response
Local residents rushed to the crash site, visibly shaken by the horrific scene. Emergency teams, including military personnel and police officers, quickly sealed off the area and began search and recovery operations.
A resident who spoke to journalists said,
“We heard a strange sound above us, then a loud bang. When we arrived, we saw smoke and debris.”
Common Training Zone Turns Tragic
Reports indicate the crash occurred in an area often used by the military for flight exercises. Fortunately, no civilian casualties were reported despite the crash occurring near a school.
KDF is expected to launch an investigation into the exact cause of the crash, as Kenyans mourn the loss of two brave souls in service of the nation.
