Traffic Alert! Key Roads in Karen, Lang’ata, and Ngong to Close for Heart to Heart Run and Nairobi City Marathon
Nairobi drivers are in for a rough weekend as major roads across the city will be closed or heavily restricted for two major events: the Heart to Heart Run and the Nairobi City Marathon.
The chaos starts Saturday, July 5, at 7:00 AM when hundreds of runners will lace up for the Heart to Heart Run, beginning at Waterfront Mall in Karen. The charity event, aimed at raising funds for children with heart conditions, will feature two races — a 7km and a 4.8km route.

Karen Roads Closed for Hours as Runners Take Over
Sections of key roads — Lang’ata Road, Ngong Road, Dagoretti Road, Miotoni Road, Bogani Road, Karen Road, and Warai Road — will be temporarily closed or restricted to allow runners safe passage.
“We urge motorists to avoid these areas early Saturday and use alternative routes,” event organisers advised.
“We’re coordinating closely with Nairobi traffic police to ensure smooth flow.”
The 7km race will loop through Karen Hospital, Brookhouse School, and Polo streets, while the 4.8km route forms a triangle along Lang’ata, Ngong, and Dagoretti roads.
That’s Not All — Marathon to Shut Down Nairobi Expressway
While Saturday is for charity, Sunday, July 6, belongs to the runners. The Nairobi City Marathon returns for its fourth edition — and it’s going to be the biggest one yet.
Organisers expect over 15,000 participants to flood the streets, starting from dawn. However, the most dramatic impact will be on the Nairobi Expressway, which will be completely shut down from James Gichuru to JKIA.

“The Expressway will close from 10pm on Saturday until 3pm on Sunday,” officials confirmed.
“All motorists should find alternative routes or expect significant delays.”
Other affected roads will be announced through official channels. However, early planning is key to avoid being trapped in traffic.
Residents React: “We Support the Cause, But We Also Need Clear Directions”
While many support the charity and fitness events, several Nairobians have called on authorities to provide clear signage and timely updates to avoid confusion.

“We’re not against the events. But please guide us better,” one Karen resident pleaded.
Two races. Two days. One city. Nairobi prepares to run — but can its roads keep up?
