One-Week Closure: Mombasa Road to Shut Down at Simba Colt – Ole Sereni
Motorists using Mombasa Road are in for a major disruption. The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced a week-long partial closure of the Nairobi-bound section between Simba Colt (FUSO) and Ole Sereni (Southern Bypass Interchange).
This critical stretch will be closed from Saturday, July 5, to Saturday, July 12, 2025, to allow for essential highway maintenance.
Diversions Announced for Heavy Vehicles and Other Road Users
According to a public statement issued on Saturday, June 28, KeNHA Director General Kung’u Ndungu confirmed the road closure and explained how traffic will be redirected.
“During this period of the road closure, heavy vehicles with a gross weight greater than 3.5 tons and other motorists heading to the Southern Bypass will be diverted to exit the main highway at Kyang’ombe Slip Road,”
KeNHA stated.
But it’s not just trucks that will be affected.

“They will use old Mombasa Road, while other vehicles will utilise a single lane that will be provided along the affected section,”
he added.
Safety First: KeNHA Urges Motorists to Follow Directions
Motorists are being urged to stay alert and obey all traffic signs and police directions to avoid confusion.
“Follow the proposed traffic management plan herein and cooperate with the police and traffic marshals on the site,”
read the KeNHA notice.
Why This Matters: A Key Road in the Trans-Africa Highway Network
This portion of A8 road is more than just a local highway. It is a vital link in the Trans-Africa Highway, connecting Mombasa to inland towns, the Ugandan border, and even all the way to Lagos, Nigeria.
This shows how even a short closure can ripple across the region’s trade and transport network.
More Disruptions Incoming
Earlier, KeNHA had issued another notice about a 45-day traffic disruption at the Gitaru Interchange, connecting Waiyaki Way with the Southern and Western Bypasses. This closure is scheduled from June 28 to August 11, 2025.

Final Word
If you’re planning to use Mombasa Road next week, especially the Simba Colt – Ole Sereni section, plan early, expect delays, and follow diversion signs. Authorities are working hard to upgrade the road — but cooperation from the public is key.
