Siaya County Commissioner Cracks Whip on Civil Servants Over Mashujaa Day Absence

Siaya County Commissioner Mobert Komora has issued a stern warning to civil servants who skipped this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations. The directive came after less than 200 government staff attended the county event held at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga grounds on Monday, October 20.

“It’s Not a Day to Watch TV” — Komora’s Fury Unleashed

Addressing the visibly small crowd, Komora expressed deep disappointment over the poor turnout. He didn’t mince his words.

“Days of national celebrations are supposed to be observed by all civil servants,” Komora stated. “It is not their day to stay at home to watch television. They are supposed to be here.”

He immediately instructed his deputy to conduct a roll call of all government officers present.

“Submit Written Explanations” — Show-Cause Letters Incoming

Komora directed all absent staff to submit written explanations for their non-attendance. He warned that failure to comply would attract disciplinary action.

“If they do not work for the government, or the Siaya County government, they can kindly tender their resignation letters,” he added. “We will find other people who can work for the government.”

His remarks triggered mixed reactions among attendees, many of whom felt the directive was long overdue.

“Low Turnout Across Kenya” — Not Just Siaya

Although Siaya’s attendance was poor, other counties also experienced similar challenges. In Mombasa, the turnout was equally low.

Mombasa County Commissioner Mohammed Nur attributed the absence to the burial of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, which took place a day earlier in Bondo.

“The burial of Raila Odinga affected attendance in several regions,” Nur explained.

“We Honored Raila” — Mashujaa Day Dedicated to a Hero

This year’s Mashujaa Day was especially emotional. It was dedicated to Raila Odinga, who passed away on Wednesday, October 15, at the age of 80.

He was laid to rest on Sunday, October 19, at his father’s home in Kang’o ka Jaramogi, Bondo.

President William Ruto, speaking in Kitui County, paid tribute to Raila’s legacy.

“We honor Raila Odinga for his immense sacrifice in shaping Kenya’s transformation,” Ruto said. “He is awarded the Chief of the Order of the Golden Heart.”

“We Must Show Up” — Komora’s Final Word

Komora emphasized that national events are not optional. He urged all civil servants to treat such days with the respect they deserve.

“Mashujaa Day is not just a holiday. It’s a day to honor our heroes,” he said.

His directive has sparked debate across the county, with many now bracing for possible disciplinary action.
