Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga was laid to rest on Sunday evening in a solemn and emotionally charged ceremony at Kang’o Ka Jaramogi, his ancestral home in Bondo, Siaya County. The burial, marked by deep symbolism and tradition, was attended by family, top national leaders, and a limited number of mourners allowed at the private ceremony.

A Farewell Steeped in Symbolism

Raila, who passed away on October 15 in India, was buried wearing his iconic hat and holding his famous whisk — both of which carried immense cultural and political meaning.

“He was laid to rest with his trademark hat, known as ‘Ogudu’, and the ceremonial whisk, or ‘Orengo’, to honour his legacy and authority,” a family source confirmed.

The final rites turned intimate as only a few dignitaries — including President William Ruto, Cabinet Secretaries, ODM officials, and close allies — joined the family to lower Raila’s casket.

Among the select few was Maurice Ogeta, Raila’s long-serving bodyguard, who tearfully paid his last respects. Ogeta, recently promised a government job by President Ruto, was seen emotionally holding the casket, symbolizing years of loyalty and service to his fallen boss.

Cultural Meaning Behind the Whisk and Hat

In Luo culture, both the whisk and hat hold deep significance. The whisk, often carried by respected elders and leaders, represents authority, wisdom, and continuity.

“Burying a leader with a whisk means his influence and dignity transcend death. He continues to lead, even in the spirit world,” explained a Luo elder present at the ceremony.

Similarly, Raila’s signature hat has long been part of his identity. It was more than fashion — it was a symbol of resilience, charisma, and unbroken spirit. Together, the two items honoured him not just as a politician but as a symbol of strength and hope.

Honour From the Nation and Family

As Raila’s casket was lowered, the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) performed a final salute, and the national flag was presented to Mama Ida Odinga.

“The flag represents respect and recognition for Raila’s lifelong service to Kenya,” said a military officer during the handover.

The moment, filled with emotion, captured the unity and reverence that defined Raila’s send-off. His burial combined both traditional and state honours, reflecting his dual role as a national leader and cultural icon.

A Legacy That Lives On

Observers noted another powerful symbol during the ceremonies. Raila’s lastborn son, Raila Odinga Junior, was spotted holding his father’s ceremonial whisk during the public viewing at Parliament Buildings on Friday. The sight stirred conversations about continuity and the Odinga family’s political future.

“Junior holding the whisk was more than just tribute. It was a sign that the Odinga legacy lives on,” remarked a family ally.

For many mourners, the burial felt like the closing of a historic chapter — yet also the passing of a torch. The images of Raila’s hat, his whisk, and his people’s tears will linger in Kenya’s collective memory for years to come.
