“I Walk for Kenya!”—71-Year-Old Man Treks 11 Days to Attend Mashujaa Day in Kitui

Stephen Kariuki, a 71-year-old patriot from Nakuru, has captured the hearts of Kenyans after walking for 11 days to attend Mashujaa Day celebrations in Kitui. His journey, which began on October 9, ended on October 19—just in time for the national event held at Ithookwe Stadium.

“I Was Born in 1963”—Kariuki’s Journey of Patriotism

Clad in a red beret, a jacket, and carrying a Kenyan flag, Kariuki stood out among thousands. He also carried a backpack and a three-legged chair painted in Kenyan flag colours.

“I have walked for 11 days. I began the journey on October 9 and arrived here yesterday,” Kariuki revealed. “I am 71 years old and I was born in 1963 when Kenya attained its independence,” he added.

He explained that walking to national events has become his tradition. This year marked his eleventh trek to Mashujaa Day.

“I have come here to commemorate the brave Kenyans who fought on behalf of this country,” he said. “I love walking. In the past, I have walked to 14 Mashujaa Day events,” Kariuki added.

“I Slept in Matuu”—A Journey Through Counties

During his journey, Kariuki passed through several counties. He stopped overnight in Matuu, Machakos County, before continuing to Kitui.

“I slept in Matuu. People were kind. They gave me food and shelter,” Kariuki shared.

He has previously walked to Nairobi, Kakamega, Kisii, and now Kitui. Each step, he says, is a tribute to Kenya’s heroes.

“I Walk to Show Love for Kenya”—His Motivation

When asked why he walks, Kariuki didn’t hesitate.

“I walk as a symbol of patriotism and a show of love for Kenya,” he said.

Despite his age, he remains committed to honoring Kenya’s freedom fighters.

“I couldn’t fight for independence. But I can walk to celebrate those who did,” he explained.

“I’ll Raise Funds to Return”—Support Needed

After the one-day event, Kariuki revealed he plans to raise funds for his return journey.

“I’ll ask my family and friends to help me get back home,” he said.

His story has touched many, with Kenyans praising his dedication and spirit.

“Over 20,000 Attended”—Mashujaa Day Draws Massive Crowd

The Mashujaa Day event saw over 20,000 Kenyans fill Ithookwe Stadium. President William Ruto and Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye attended as key guests.
