Pheroze Nowrojee: Kenyan Constitutional Lawyer, Human Rights Defender Dies at 83

Kenya has lost one of its finest legal minds. Senior Counsel Pheroze Nowrojee, a celebrated constitutional lawyer and human rights defender, has passed away. His death sent shockwaves through the country and the legal fraternity.

A Nation in Mourning

The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) president, Faith Odhiambo, confirmed his death with a heartfelt tribute.

“A teacher, a mentor, human and constitutional lawyer, poet, writer, and an unwavering defender of justice,” she said.

“SC Nowrojee leaves behind a legacy etched in the soul of our nation and the conscience of our legal profession.”

Faith described him as “the ultimate colossus of legal practice.” Her words reflect the deep respect Nowrojee commanded in every courtroom and beyond.

A Life Lived for Justice

Nowrojee’s journey in law began early. He followed his father, A.R. Kapila, into courtrooms as a child. One case shaped his young heart—the Mau Mau Lari massacre trials in Githunguri in 1953. His father was defending.

From Nairobi’s Catholic Parochial Primary to India’s Billimoria High School, and later Bombay University, Dar-es-Salaam, and Yale Law School in the US—his education mirrored his global vision for justice.

Since 1965, when he became an advocate, Nowrojee never turned back. He took on oppressive governments, defended the weak, and stood firm for democracy.

A Defender of Democracy

Nowrojee’s bold voice was never silenced, even when it meant challenging the powerful. He was part of Raila Odinga’s legal team in the 2022 presidential petition. His courtroom presence was commanding, his arguments legendary.

“Quite saddened to learn that my senior, Senior Counsel Pheroze Nowrojee has passed on! A quintessential advocate,” said Rarieda MP Otiende Amollo.

Former MP and lawyer Gitobu Imanyara also paid tribute.

“Our mentor and a great patriot… what a loss to the legal profession and to this country,” he mourned.

Kenyans Share Their Grief

Social media flooded with tributes:

“A lawyer who defended social justice and democracy,” wrote @Elijah_Ogaya.

@Wainainajos said, “He has now finished his tour of duty.”

@Marcus9396 remembered seeing him during the Goldenberg inquiry as a child.

@wilsonmukuna sent “deepest condolences to the family and the legal fraternity.”

A Final Salute

Nowrojee’s death leaves a void that few can fill. He lived for justice, spoke for the voiceless, and taught generations of lawyers. Kenya bows its head not just in grief—but in gratitude.
