Panic in Kisumu as 21-Year-Old Opens Fire on Police With AK-47

Kisumu’s Central Business District turned into a war zone on Monday morning after a 21-year-old man opened fire on police officers. The terrifying incident unfolded along Otieno Oyoo Street, sending traders and pedestrians running for their lives.

According to Kisumu Central Deputy Sub-County Police Commandant Bakari Mwanauli, the drama began when officers spotted the suspect with two others carrying a suspicious bag.

“This morning, we had an incident at around the Patel Samaj Temple along Otieno Oyoo Street,” Mwanauli said. “One of the assailants had a bag that drew suspicion. Upon spotting the officers, he withdrew an assault rifle and started shooting at them.”

The suspect immediately engaged police in a fierce exchange of gunfire, causing chaos in the busy street.

“He Held a Guard Hostage” — Temple Compound Turned Into Battlefield

After the initial shootout, the suspect stormed into the Patel Samaj Temple compound. There, he reportedly held a security guard at gunpoint, robbed him of his phone and other belongings, and tied him up.

“He climbed to the top of the building and positioned himself near a water tank,” a witness said. “It was like a scene from a movie.”

From his elevated position, the suspect continued firing at police as terrified residents and worshippers scrambled for safety.

“We Recovered the Rifle” — Police Subdue Gunman

A special team of officers, supported by patrol units nearby, managed to subdue and arrest the suspect. They recovered an AK-47 rifle and five rounds of ammunition.

“The weapon is suspected to have been used in multiple robbery incidents within Kisumu,” Mwanauli confirmed.

The suspect is now in custody at Kisumu Central Police Station. Investigations are underway to trace the origin of the firearm and identify his accomplices.

“Two Accomplices Escaped” — Police Launch Manhunt

While the main suspect was arrested, his two accomplices managed to flee. Police have launched a manhunt to track them down.

“We are pursuing the other two suspects who escaped,” a senior officer said. “We urge the public to report any suspicious individuals.”

The suspect is expected to be arraigned in court soon.

“Kisumu’s Gun Violence History” — City Still Healing

This isn’t the first time Kisumu has faced gun-related chaos. In March 2021, a man grabbed a pistol from a traffic officer and opened fire, killing one and injuring three.

In 2024, a DCI officer was stabbed to death by a gang in Riat while heading home.

“We need tighter security in Kisumu,” a resident said. “These incidents are becoming too frequent.”

As the city recovers from the shock, many are calling for increased patrols and stricter gun control measures.
