DCI Arrests Four, Recovers Stolen Gun Snatched During Raila Odinga’s Burial

A loaded firearm stolen during the burial of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has been recovered. Officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) arrested four suspects linked to the theft on Saturday, October 25, following a public tip-off.

“They Surrounded the Vehicle” — Officer Recalls Moment of Theft

The incident occurred on Sunday, October 19, at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST) gate. The officer, based at GSU headquarters in Ruaraka, had been assigned to escort Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa.

“I was boarding the governor’s vehicle when a group of youths surrounded us,” the officer said. “One of them snatched my firearm and disappeared into the crowd.”

The chaos at the burial made it difficult for security teams to respond swiftly. Thousands of mourners had gathered to pay their last respects, creating a dense and emotional atmosphere.

“We Received a Tip-Off” — DCI Tracks Down Suspects

Despite the initial setback, detectives launched a probe across Siaya and neighboring counties. Their efforts paid off when residents in Kisumu East’s Mbeme area alerted authorities.

“We received a tip-off about suspicious individuals hiding in Mbeme,” a DCI officer confirmed. “We moved in quickly and recovered the stolen firearm.”

The suspects were arrested at their hideout and taken to Kasagam Police Station. They are now in custody, awaiting arraignment.

“The Gun Was Loaded” — Public Safety Concerns Raised

The recovered firearm was still loaded, raising serious concerns about public safety. Authorities praised the swift action of local residents who helped prevent further danger.

“This weapon could have caused unimaginable harm,” a senior officer stated. “We thank the public for their vigilance and cooperation.”

The incident has sparked renewed calls for tighter security during high-profile funerals and national events.

“Raila’s Burial Drew Thousands” — Security Stretched Thin

Raila Odinga’s burial was a state event attended by thousands, including dignitaries from across the country. President William Ruto had declared seven days of national mourning following Raila’s death on Wednesday, October 15.

The massive turnout overwhelmed security personnel, making it easier for criminal elements to exploit the situation.

“We were stretched. The crowd was emotional and massive,” a police source admitted. “We did our best under the circumstances.”

“Justice Must Be Served” — Public Demands Accountability

Kenyans have expressed outrage over the incident, demanding swift justice and better protection during national ceremonies.

“This is unacceptable. We need tighter security,” one mourner said. “Let the suspects face the full force of the law,” another added.
