The incident occurred on Sunday, October 19, at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST) gate. The officer, based at GSU headquarters in Ruaraka, had been assigned to escort Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa.

“I was boarding the governor’s vehicle when a group of youths surrounded us,” the officer said. “One of them snatched my firearm and disappeared into the crowd.”

Despite the initial setback, detectives launched a probe across Siaya and neighboring counties. Their efforts paid off when residents in Kisumu East’s Mbeme area alerted authorities.
“We received a tip-off about suspicious individuals hiding in Mbeme,” a DCI officer confirmed. “We moved in quickly and recovered the stolen firearm.”
Raila Odinga’s burial was a state event attended by thousands, including dignitaries from across the country. President William Ruto had declared seven days of national mourning following Raila’s death on Wednesday, October 15.
The massive turnout overwhelmed security personnel, making it easier for criminal elements to exploit the situation.
