Ruto Bans Furniture Imports, Lifts Logging Ban to Boost Local Jobs and Industry

In a bold move to revive Kenya’s timber industry and create jobs, President William Ruto has announced a nationwide ban on furniture imports. At the same time, he lifted the six-year-long logging ban in the Mau Forest Complex, allowing controlled harvesting of mature trees.

“We Will Use Our Own Wood” — Ruto Declares in Elburgon

Speaking passionately to residents in Elburgon, Molo, on Monday, October 27, Ruto emphasized the need for self-reliance.

“We shall reopen this timber factory here (Elburgon) because I have told my Minister of Trade, Lee Kinyanjui, that this tendency of importing furniture…seats and beds from China, must end,” Ruto declared. “We will use our wood to make furniture.”

He insisted that Kenya has enough raw materials and skilled youth to meet the country’s furniture needs.

“Furniture to be used in Kenya will use timber made from here, and our Kenyan youth will create that furniture,” he added.

“Factories Will Rise Again” — Government to Build Processing Plants

To support the new directive, Ruto announced plans to establish wood-processing factories across the country. These facilities will ensure that commercial trees are fully utilized and value is added locally.

“We will ensure new wood-processing factories are set up to support this initiative,” he said.

This move is expected to stimulate local economies and reduce reliance on foreign imports.

“Mature Trees Only” — Logging to Resume with Caution

While lifting the logging ban, Ruto clarified that only mature trees will be harvested. He assured Kenyans that environmental sustainability remains a priority.

“We will start selling mature trees in our forests to local sawmillers from next week,” he announced. “And tomorrow I will have a conversation with sawmillers here so that they may revive the wood processing factory that was here.”

This decision comes as timber sales from government forests reportedly tripled last year, signaling a growing demand.

“Jobs for Our Youth” — Economic Revival at the Core

Ruto stressed that the initiative aims to create employment, especially for young people in timber-rich regions like Elburgon.

“This move will create jobs for our youth and boost our economy,” he affirmed.

By tapping into local resources, the government hopes to empower communities and reduce unemployment.

“15 Billion Trees in 10 Years” — Ruto Promises Reforestation

To balance economic growth with environmental protection, Ruto pledged a massive reforestation campaign.

“We will plant 15 billion trees in the next 10 years,” he vowed.

This ambitious plan aims to restore Kenya’s forest cover while supporting sustainable logging practices.

As the country prepares for this shift, many see the move as a turning point for Kenya’s manufacturing and environmental future.
