ODM Clarifies Youth Leadership Amid Controversy Over Kasmuel McOure’s Role
The controversy emerged after a publication circulated during ODM’s 20th anniversary celebrations in Mombasa on Friday, November 14, listed McOure as the Youth League President. The newsletter, which also contained names of other party leaders, sparked questions about the authenticity of the party’s official organisational structure.

“The President of the ODM Youth League is Honourable Johnmark Ketorah. Ignore any publication circulating containing misleading information on the same,” read the party’s statement.
Background of the Controversy
McOure, a political activist and long‑time supporter of ODM, has been active in mobilising youth but has not held a formal leadership role within the party. In 2024, he was appointed by former Prime Minister Raila Odinga as part of the youth and student league members, tasked with engaging young people and shaping ODM’s future agenda.
Despite his involvement, ODM clarified that McOure has not been elevated to the presidency of the Youth League, a position formally held by Ketorah since 2016.
Ketorah’s Tenure
Johnmark Ketorah was appointed Youth League President by the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) nearly a decade ago. His appointment followed recommendations from fellow youth league members, and he has since played a central role in mobilising young supporters and strengthening ODM’s grassroots presence.
Party insiders credit Ketorah with reshaping the youth wing into a more structured and influential arm of ODM, ensuring that young voices are represented in the party’s decision‑making processes.
Leadership Changes in ODM
The clarification comes just two days after ODM announced significant changes within its broader leadership. Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga was formally approved as the party leader, succeeding his late brother Raila Odinga.
The National Governing Council also endorsed Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir, Kisii Governor Simba Arati, and Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi as deputy party leaders. These appointments are seen as part of ODM’s efforts to consolidate its leadership and prepare for the 2027 General Election.

Implications for ODM
Analysts say the confusion over McOure’s role highlights the sensitivity of leadership positions within ODM, particularly at a time when the party is undergoing transition. With Raila Odinga’s passing last month, ODM has been keen to project unity and stability while reorganising its structures.
The Youth League, in particular, is viewed as a critical pillar for ODM’s future, given Kenya’s youthful population and the importance of youth mobilisation in electoral politics. Ensuring clarity in leadership is therefore seen as essential to maintaining credibility and cohesion within the party.
Conclusion
By reaffirming Johnmark Ketorah’s position as Youth League President, ODM has sought to put to rest speculation about McOure’s role and restore confidence in its organisational structure. The clarification underscores the party’s commitment to transparency as it navigates leadership changes and prepares for the next phase of its political journey.
As ODM marks two decades of existence, the focus now shifts to how its leadership—both senior and youth—will steer the party through a period of transition and position it for the challenges ahead.
