ODM Approves Oburu Odinga as ODM Party Leader, Makes Leadership Changes
The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has formally confirmed Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga as its party leader, elevating him from an interim role to the helm of the party. The decision was made during a meeting of the National Governing Council (NGC) on Thursday, November 13, marking a significant leadership transition following the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga last month.
In its statement, ODM announced that Oburu’s appointment was accompanied by several other leadership changes intended to strengthen the party’s structure ahead of the 2027 General Election.

“The National Governing Council (NGC) has approved the appointment of Senator Oburu Odinga as the Party Leader of the party. Also approved are DPLs Abdulswamad Sheriff Nassir, Godfrey Osotsi, and Simba Arati as Deputy Party Leaders,” ODM said.
Leadership Reshuffle
The party confirmed Kisumu Woman Representative Ruth Odinga as Deputy Organising Secretary, while Rarieda MP Otiendo Amollo and Turkana South MP Ariko Namoit were appointed Vice Chairpersons. They will serve alongside Johnes Mwaruma and Christine Lemein, who already hold similar positions.
Additionally, Rosa Buyu was named Secretary of Political Affairs. All appointments will be formally ratified by the National Delegates Convention (NDC), the party’s highest decision‑making organ.

Transition After Raila
Oburu’s elevation to party leader had long been anticipated, with ODM officials previously signaling that the veteran legislator would take over permanently. His appointment underscores the party’s determination to maintain continuity while preparing for a future without its founding figurehead.
The announcement comes as ODM prepares to celebrate its 20th anniversary in Mombasa from Friday, November 14, to Sunday, November 16. The event is expected to attract senior ODM leaders and national figures, including President William Ruto, who is scheduled to attend the ODM Founders’ Dinner on Saturday.
Party Direction
Analysts say the leadership changes reflect ODM’s evolving strategy as it seeks to balance its legacy with new political realities. The party has recently engaged in broad‑based partnerships, including cooperation with President Ruto’s administration, signaling a pragmatic approach ahead of the next election cycle.
Party insiders note that Oburu’s leadership will be critical in steering ODM through this transitional period. His long service in politics, including his tenure as Siaya Senator and previous roles in Parliament, positions him as a stabilizing figure within the party.
Looking Ahead
The appointments highlight ODM’s focus on strengthening its organizational capacity and preparing for the 2027 General Election. With Oburu at the helm, the party is expected to continue advocating for reforms while consolidating its base across the country.

“These appointments reflect ODM’s commitment to unity, continuity, and readiness for the challenges ahead,” a senior party official remarked during the announcement.
