Atwoli Urges Sifuna to Avoid Political Wars, Preserve ODM Unity After Raila’s Death

COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli has issued a heartfelt plea to ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna, urging him to steer clear of internal political battles. His message comes at a critical time for the Orange Democratic Movement, which is still reeling from the loss of its founding leader, Raila Odinga.

“Raila Was the Glue” — Atwoli Calls for Calm and Unity

In a statement posted on his official X account on Tuesday, October 28, Atwoli emphasized the importance of unity within ODM.

“Senator Edwin Sifuna must now show maturity as he leads the ODM party,” Atwoli wrote. “My advice to Sifuna is this: remain calm, avoid unnecessary political wars now, and honour Raila Odinga’s legacy by standing with the party during this sensitive period. Raila was the glue that united us all.”

Atwoli praised Sifuna’s recent public appearance alongside Oburu Odinga, calling it a sign of wisdom.

“I liked the wisdom in my son Edwin Sifuna reading that statement with Oburu Odinga standing beside him,” he added. “Sifuna is NOW wise, and those advising him to start small wars within the ODM party are not helping him.”

“ODM Must Stay Strong” — Party Endorses Oburu Odinga as Interim Leader

Atwoli’s remarks followed ODM’s announcement of a united front moving forward. On Monday, the party’s Central Management Committee endorsed Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga as interim party leader.

“The party will remain united to pave the way for the next phase of leadership,” the statement read.

The committee urged all ODM members to support Oburu during the transition period.

“We Will Celebrate Raila’s Legacy” — Sifuna Announces Memorial Events

Despite internal tensions, Sifuna confirmed that ODM will continue with its planned 20th anniversary celebrations in Mombasa on November 15 and 16. The event will honor Raila’s contributions and reflect on the party’s journey.

“The party will hold various memorial events across the country to enable the party to interact with those he inspired,” Sifuna said.

The memorial services will begin in Kilifi on November 2 and 3, then move to Homa Bay and Migori on November 5 and 6.

“Avoid Division” — Atwoli Warns Against Political Provocation

Atwoli cautioned Sifuna against engaging with leaders who seek to provoke internal conflict.

“Avoid leaders and political stakeholders encouraging you to ignite small wars,” he advised. “Such actions will only lead to division.”

He stressed that ODM’s strength lies in its unity, especially now that Raila is gone.

“A New Chapter Begins” — ODM Faces Future Without Raila

As ODM prepares for its next chapter, leaders like Atwoli are calling for wisdom, patience, and solidarity. The party’s future depends on its ability to honor Raila’s legacy and remain united.

“We must protect what Raila built,” Atwoli concluded.
