Ruto Pledges Support for ODM, Hints at Coalition Ahead of 2027 Polls

President William Ruto has sent shockwaves across Kenya’s political landscape after declaring his intention to support the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) — the late Raila Odinga’s party — in the 2027 General Election.

Speaking passionately during Raila’s funeral service at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University in Bondo, Siaya County, the President vowed to honour Raila’s legacy by strengthening the very party the former Prime Minister built from the ground up.

“I want to tell you, my brothers in ODM, that in line with Baba’s desire to build the largest political party, we will support ODM in 2027. That is the only way we can ensure we have an effective government,” Ruto declared as mourners cheered.

A Promise to Preserve Raila’s Political Dream

Ruto praised Raila’s lifelong commitment to democracy, describing ODM as a “vital pillar” in Kenya’s political growth. He maintained that the party would play a significant role in shaping the next government.

“To ODM members, I want to assure you that ODM will either form the next government or be part of the next government,” he added firmly, sparking murmurs of surprise and excitement among mourners.

His remarks came amid whispers that some ODM members currently working in government might be sidelined as political realignments intensify. However, Ruto’s comments appeared to signal a new wave of cooperation and reconciliation between his United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and ODM.

Political observers have since interpreted the statement as a strategic hint at a possible coalition ahead of the 2027 elections — a move that could drastically reshape Kenya’s political future.

Ruto’s Tribute to Raila’s Loyal Bodyguard

During the same event, the President turned emotional as he recognized Maurice Ogeta, Raila’s long-serving bodyguard.

“I must thank his security people, Maurice Ogeta especially, for standing with Raila always. We will take care of those who stood by him,” Ruto said.

His announcement that Ogeta would receive a state job was met with loud applause, with many praising the gesture as an act of compassion and unity.

ODM Members Speak on the Party’s Future

Even as Ruto extended an olive branch, ODM members were quick to affirm their loyalty to Raila’s vision.

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, who has faced speculation about his political direction since Raila’s death, reassured supporters that ODM would remain strong and united.

“I will commit myself to keeping this party together, whatever it takes,” Sifuna boldly stated.

Similarly, Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir promised a bold future for ODM.

“In 2027, ODM will either be in government or be the government, but not in opposition,” he declared, drawing applause from mourners.

A Call for Unity Within ODM

Raila’s sister, Ruth Odinga, issued a heartfelt warning to party members against internal divisions.

“Some people want to run this party against Raila’s wishes. We must stay united and protect what he built,” she urged passionately.

Her remarks reflected the emotional tension of the day — a mix of mourning, reflection, and renewed commitment to the values Raila championed.

As the sun set over Bondo, Ruto’s message stood out — a promise of partnership, peace, and political evolution. Whether ODM and UDA will truly join hands remains to be seen, but for the first time in years, Kenya’s political rivals shared one voice in honour of a fallen statesman.
