KNEC Issues Urgent Directive for Grade 9 Learners with Talents in Arts and Sports
A wave of excitement and urgency has swept through schools across Kenya. The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) has issued a directive that could shape the future of thousands of Grade 9 learners. Talented students in arts and sports must be nominated for placement in the Arts and Sports Science Pathway before October 17, 2025.
“Nominate Learners with Exceptional Potential,” KNEC CEO Urges
KNEC Chief Executive Officer David Njengere emphasized the importance of this process. He said the nominations are part of preparations for the rollout of senior school pathways under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), set to begin in January 2026.

“Schools must nominate learners who have demonstrated potential in Visual Arts, Sports, Theatre, Music, and Dance,” Njengere stated.
He added that the Ministry of Education has provided a Nomination Tool to guide teachers in selecting the right candidates.
Clear Guidelines for Online Submission
To streamline the process, schools must log into the nomination portal using their school code as both username and password. After reviewing the user manual, they can change the password and begin submitting details.
“Schools must ensure the information submitted is accurate and compliant,” the directive read.
Required documents include evidence of performances, exhibitions, awards, and originality of works. These materials will help assess each learner’s suitability for the pathway.

Three Pathways, One Future
The Ministry has outlined three senior school pathways:
- Social Sciences
- Arts and Sports Science
- Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM)
Each pathway is designed to reflect learners’ potential, achievements, and aspirations.
“This is a chance to nurture gifted learners and guide them toward their dreams,” Njengere added.
Teachers and Parents Called to Act Fast
With the deadline fast approaching, schools are urged to act swiftly. Teachers must identify and nominate learners objectively, focusing only on those with exceptional talent.
“We must not miss this opportunity to uplift our young artists and athletes,” said a Nairobi-based teacher.
Parents are also encouraged to support their children’s talents and ensure schools submit nominations on time.
