Govt Moves to Acquire Land in Kiambu, Machakos, Kwale & Kisumu for Water and Road Projects
The National Land Commission (NLC) has announced a sweeping land acquisition plan across four counties to fast-track vital infrastructure projects. The move, aimed at boosting water supply and road connectivity, has stirred mixed emotions among affected residents.
“We Need This Water”—Kiambu Faces Major Land Takeover
In Kiambu County, the NLC published a notice for land acquisition to complete the Karimenu II Dam Water Supply Project. The targeted areas include Chania and Mataara.
“This project will boost water supply to Nairobi, Thika, and Juja,” said an official from Athi Water Works Development Agency (AWWDA).

Landowners have been directed to inspect project plans at NLC offices and prepare compensation documents.
“Sewerage Must Improve”—Machakos Sanitation Project Expands
Meanwhile, in Machakos County, the government plans to acquire land for the expansion of the Machakos Sanitation Project. The project will enhance sewerage and wastewater systems.
“We’ve scheduled public hearings to allow affected persons to file compensation claims,” the NLC confirmed.
Residents have welcomed the development but urged transparency in compensation.
“We’re Still Waiting”—Kwale Locals Brace for Road Construction
In Kwale County, the government earmarked land for the Kwale–Kinango (B92) Road. The NLC listed several plots in Dumbule for inquiry.
“This road will link us to Dongo Kundu and Mombasa Port,” said a local trader. “We hope compensation comes quickly,” another added.
The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) is overseeing the project.
“Sugar Belt Needs Roads”—Kisumu Set for Major Reconstruction
In Kisumu County, the NLC plans to acquire land for the Mamboleo–Miwani–Chemelil–Muhoroni–Kipsitet (B132) Road. The road connects the sugar belt to Kisumu City.

“This road will reduce transport costs and improve market access,” KeNHA stated.
Several landowners along the Mamboleo Junction to Miwani section will be affected.
“Submit Your Claims”—NLC Urges Landowners to Act Fast
“Compensation will be processed once documents are verified,” the commission assured.
As the projects roll out, communities are hopeful but cautious, demanding fairness and speed.
