First Gusii Woman MP Dies After Collapsing by Roadside

Kenya is in mourning following the sudden death of former Nominated Member of Parliament Catherine Nyamato. A pioneer, a fearless leader, and a mother to many, Nyamato collapsed near her Kijauri farm in Nyamira County on Wednesday.

According to witnesses, she was engaging youth in a community project when the tragedy struck.

“She was encouraging the youth working on a local initiative when she suddenly collapsed,” a local resident recounted.

Despite being rushed immediately to Summit Hospital, doctors pronounced her dead upon arrival.

Her unexpected demise triggered an overwhelming wave of grief and reflection. Kenyans flooded social media with heartfelt tributes.

A Trailblazer for Women

Nyamato made history as the first Gusii woman MP, having been nominated by former President Daniel Arap Moi under the KANU regime. She served from 1997 to 2002, carving a place in history books as a trailblazer for women’s leadership in Kenya.

Throughout her life, she wore many leadership hats. She was the National Women Leader for Narc-Kenya and the Secretary General of the League of Kenyan Women Voters.

Remembered for Passion and Purpose

The Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA) mourned her passionately, stating:

“She was a fearless advocate for women’s rights, a bold champion for gender equality, and a warrior against FGM. She inspired a generation.”

Former IEBC Commissioner Roselyne Akombe gave an emotional tribute:

“This loss is so deep. So devastating. Catherine Nyamato took me in as her own daughter when I was in university and mentored me. I have lost my second mother, whom I loved so dearly and who meant so much for our family.”

Selfless, Humble, and Devoted

Education CS Julius Ogamba praised her legacy:

“She gave her life to serve others with compassion, humility, and integrity. Her efforts to uplift her community will never be forgotten.”

Despite setbacks in recent politics—like her recent attempt at the Nyamira Woman Rep seat—Nyamato remained determined. At the time of her death, she was pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Leadership and Management at Strathmore University.

Her life was a testimony of perseverance, resilience, and unwavering dedication to public service.

Her body now lies at the center of national mourning, but her legacy will echo in Kenyan history for generations to come.
