DIG Lagat Steps Aside Amid Outcry Over Blogger Ojwang’s Death in Police Custody
In a shocking move, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Eliud Lagat has voluntarily stepped aside. This follows growing outrage over the mysterious death of teacher and blogger Albert Ojwang in police custody.
In a Monday statement, Lagat said:
“In the good and conscious thought of my role and responsibilities… I have today opted to step aside from the office of the Deputy Inspector General—Kenya Police Service pending completion of investigations.”
He emphasized that this was a moral and personal decision to ensure the investigations remain credible and transparent.

Public Demands Justice as Protests Rock the Country
Lagat’s exit comes just days before nationwide protests. Human rights groups, civil society, and politicians have demanded accountability and swift justice.
“I offer immense condolences to the family of Albert Ojwang for their great loss,” Lagat added, noting he will fully support the probe.
Across Kenya, especially in Nairobi, anger is boiling over. Streets are set to fill with protesters demanding an end to police brutality and impunity.

Temporary Takeover by Lagat’s Deputy
Until investigations are concluded, Lagat’s deputy will act in his place. This ensures continuity in leadership during what is being described as a crisis moment for the Kenya Police Service.
Lagat’s Powerful Past Roles Under Scrutiny
Lagat, who became DIG in 2024 after Kanja was promoted to Inspector General, now finds his past under the microscope.

He was:
- Commandant of the General Service Unit (GSU) in 2023
- Director of Reforms at DCI in 2022
- Head of the Bomb and Hazardous Materials Unit before that
His law enforcement legacy, once lauded, now faces public doubt.
Maraga Calls for Arrests of Top Police Chiefs
Former Chief Justice David Maraga intensified pressure by demanding arrests of IG Kanja, DIG Lagat, and DCI boss Amin.

Speaking to journalists on June 16, Maraga declared:
“If arrests are not made before June 25, I will personally join Kenyans in launching a private prosecution.”
His bold stance has energized demonstrators and sharpened scrutiny on police leadership.
