Nanyuki Erupts in Anger: Residents Demand Justice for Julia Njoki’s Mysterious Death in Police Custody
Now, angry residents are demanding answers. They’ve announced mass protests starting Tuesday if the government fails to arrest the officers linked to Njoki’s death.
“She Was Beaten in the Cell”
Witnesses claim that Njoki’s death wasn’t natural.
“The information we have is that the girl was beaten inside the cell,” one resident stated.
“She was beaten with a blunt object. That is what made her collapse.”
According to eyewitnesses, Njoki begged for help.
“She told the police she was not feeling well, but they neglected her,” said another local.

By the time she was taken to the hospital, it was too late.
“When Njoki was being taken to the hospital, she could not talk, she could not even move her body,” a resident lamented.
“She was just dead.”
Arrested, Arraigned, Then Forgotten
Njoki’s ordeal began on July 7, when she was arrested while heading home. The next day, she appeared in court and was released on a Ksh50,000 bond. Her family, however, could not raise the money.
She was taken to Nanyuki GK Prison, where it is believed she sustained fatal injuries.
By the time help was sought, her condition had deteriorated. Njoki died shortly after arriving at Nanyuki Teaching and Referral Hospital.
Demands for Justice Multiply
Residents say they will not remain silent.
“We will protest until the truth is revealed,” vowed a youth leader.
“We want those responsible arrested and charged.”
The community has also raised concerns over the death of Thomas Gachara, a Form Three student who was allegedly shot by police during the same protests.
In a viral video, a police officer appears to aim and shoot at a young man. Moments later, he falls, lifeless.

A City on Edge
With Tuesday fast approaching, tension hangs thick in Nanyuki. The residents’ message is clear: justice or demonstrations.
“Enough is enough,” said one protest organizer. “We want accountability.”
