Eugene Wamalwa Reveals Plans to Team Up With Wetang’ula and Mudavadi Ahead of 2027 Elections
Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) leader Eugene Wamalwa has announced plans to work with National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, and other senior leaders from Western Kenya in what appears to be an early attempt to reshape the region’s political strategy ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Speaking during a public gathering in Trans Nzoia County on Saturday, January 25, Wamalwa said closer cooperation among Western Kenya leaders was necessary to strengthen unity and ensure the region remains politically influential. He described DAP-K and FORD Kenya as the most stable political parties in the region and argued that collaboration between them would help safeguard Western Kenya’s collective interests.
According to Wamalwa, internal divisions have historically weakened the region’s bargaining power at the national level, making unity a critical priority as the next election cycle approaches. “In this region, we have four parties, and when we look at the situation closely, some parties are being dissolved. We were given a challenge by the two remaining parties, DAP and FORD Kenya,” he told supporters.

However, Wamalwa was quick to clarify that his willingness to engage with Wetang’ula and Mudavadi should not be interpreted as automatic support for President William Ruto’s administration. He maintained that his focus remains on advancing the interests of Western Kenya residents rather than aligning himself with the government.
“We were given a challenge that Wetang’ula should look for me, and I look for Wetang’ula and also Musalia, as well as other leaders, so that we may plan strategies. Instead of opposing each other, I am ready to work with them so that we may support our people,” Wamalwa said.
At the same event, Speaker Moses Wetang’ula revealed that discussions were already underway to formalise a political pact between himself, Mudavadi, and Co-operatives and MSMEs Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya. He said the proposed alliance was designed to consolidate support for President Ruto in 2027, while positioning the Western region for greater political influence in the years that follow.
Wetang’ula suggested that a united Western Kenya could play a decisive role in future national leadership transitions, including the possibility of producing a president in 2032. He added that such ambitions would be easier to achieve if Wamalwa joined the broader coalition.
“I urge Wamalwa, with whom we have agreed to work together, to join his elder brothers in cementing Luhya unity behind President Ruto so that the community can realise its long-held dream of producing a president,” Wetang’ula said.

He also warned that persistent rivalry between established leaders and emerging politicians from the region could marginalise Western Kenya in national politics. According to Wetang’ula, mutual respect and cooperation were essential to maintaining relevance and negotiating power.
The developments have drawn attention because Wamalwa has been a vocal critic of the Kenya Kwanza administration and is currently associated with opposition leaders, including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka. Any shift toward collaboration with figures at the centre of government could significantly alter political alignments in the region.
The announcement comes just weeks after Wycliffe Oparanya publicly declared his willingness to leave the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) if doing so would help unite Western Kenya. “If the problem is having different parties, I am ready to leave ODM even now. Let us come together because I know that we are a sleeping giant in this country,” Oparanya said at the time.

As 2027 approaches, observers say the emerging talks signal intensified behind-the-scenes negotiations, with Western Kenya leaders seeking to redefine their collective strategy in an increasingly competitive political landscape.
