Chaos and Closure: Kisumu National Polytechnic Shut Down After Explosive Student Protests

A storm of unrest has forced Kisumu National Polytechnic to close its doors indefinitely. After a week of relentless student protests, the institution announced its immediate shutdown, leaving thousands of learners in limbo.

“We Regret the Inconvenience,” Principal Announces Closure

In a memo dated Friday, September 19, Chief Principal Cathrine Kelonye confirmed the decision. She cited continuous class boycotts and escalating tensions.

“This is to notify all staff and trainees that the Interim Council… resolved to close the institution with immediate effect,” the memo read.

Kelonye urged students to maintain peace and stay away from the premises until further notice. She also expressed deep regret over the disruption.

“The Council affirms that the inconvenient circumstances are highly regrettable,” she stated. “We assure all affected trainees, parents, and guardians that the concerns raised will be investigated,” she added.

Students Demand Justice, Slam Fee Hikes

Since September 15, students have protested against what they termed exploitative tuition fee hikes. They also accused the administration of mistreating learners and delaying critical academic documents.

“We want our attachment forms released immediately. These delays are ruining our future,” shouted one protester.

The demonstrations intensified on Tuesday, September 16, prompting police deployment. Officers clashed with students in running battles across the campus.

“We are tired of being ignored. We need the Ministry of Education to intervene,” another student demanded.

Staff to Continue Working Despite Shutdown

Although students have been sent home, Kelonye clarified that staff will continue with their duties unless advised otherwise.

“All staff are expected to report to work and maintain routine operations,” she noted.

This move aims to keep administrative functions running while investigations proceed.

Government Urged to Step In

Students have called on the Kisumu County Government and the Ministry of Education to address their grievances. Many fear the closure will derail their academic progress.

“We need answers. We can’t afford to lose an entire term,” said a concerned parent.

The situation has sparked national attention, with education advocates demanding transparency and accountability.

“Institutions must listen to students. Their voices matter,” said a local education activist.
