Tragedy at Lake Nakuru: Body of Missing South Sudanese Student Found After Days of Heartbreaking Search
Grief has engulfed Nakuru after the body of Mark Mayan, a Form Three student and South Sudan national, was retrieved from Lake Nakuru. The 17-year-old had gone missing on Friday, September 26, after a fishing trip with friends turned tragic.
“He Left Without Telling His Parents”—Family Learns of Disappearance Too Late
According to Bol Ajak Atem, chairperson of the South Sudanese community in Nakuru, Mayan left home around 7:30 pm without informing his parents.

“On September 27, we were notified by his four friends that he was missing and had drowned in the lake,” Atem said.
The friends told police and the family that Mayan had been with them until the moment he vanished. Shocked and desperate, the family immediately joined the search.
“We Searched the Lake But Found Nothing”—Hope Fades as Hours Pass
After receiving approval, the search team, accompanied by police officers from Mwariki station, combed through the lake. However, their efforts yielded no results.
“We were given access to the National Park and tried searching through the lake,” Atem revealed. “But we could not find it,” he added.
With heavy hearts, the team handed the search over to investigators. Days passed, and hope dwindled.

On Tuesday, September 30, the search ended in heartbreak. Police recovered a body from the lake and invited the family to confirm the identity.

“The body was later recovered and clearly identified by relatives,” Atem confirmed.
Mayan’s remains were transported to PNN Funeral Home for post-mortem examination and further investigation.

Mayan was a student at a local school in Nakuru. His teachers described him as quiet, focused, and full of potential.

“He was respectful and eager to learn,” one teacher shared. “This is a painful loss,” another added.
The South Sudanese community in Nakuru has rallied around the grieving family, offering support and prayers.

Locals are now demanding better safety protocols around Lake Nakuru, especially for young people who frequent the area.
“We can’t keep losing lives like this,” a resident said. “There must be warning signs and patrols,” another urged.
As investigations continue, the community mourns a life cut short far too soon.
