Shock as TSC Deregisters 15 Teachers Over Misconduct, Warns Schools of Heavy Penalties

A wave of concern has swept across Kenya’s education sector following the Teachers Service Commission’s (TSC) decision to deregister 15 teachers over serious disciplinary issues. The announcement, made through a gazette notice dated September 19, 2025, has triggered intense public debate and calls for accountability.

“These Teachers Are Barred From All Schools,” TSC Declares

TSC CEO Eveleen Mitei confirmed the deregistration, stating that the affected individuals are now prohibited from teaching in any school—public or private.

“The persons listed have been removed from the Register of Teachers,” Mitei stated. “They cannot teach unless expressly authorized by the Commission,” she added.

The Commission cited Section 30 (1)(e) of the TSC Act, which empowers it to deregister teachers for professional misconduct.

Schools Warned: Heavy Fines or Jail Time Await

Mitei didn’t mince words. She warned school heads against hiring deregistered teachers, stressing that the law will punish offenders harshly.

“Any school that employs a deregistered teacher will face a fine of not less than Ksh100,000,” she warned. “Or imprisonment for up to two years—or both,” she added.

The notice also referenced Regulation 18 of the Code of Regulations for Teachers, reinforcing the legal consequences of non-compliance.

Misconduct Cases on the Rise

TSC’s Director of Legal, Labour and Industrial Relations, Cavin Anyuor, revealed alarming statistics. Since January 2024, the Commission has received 111 cases involving teacher misconduct.

“Out of these, 69 teachers were dismissed and deregistered,” Anyuor told the Senate Education Committee. “Their offences included inappropriate conduct with learners,” he added.

Additionally, nine teachers were dismissed but not deregistered. Twenty-five were suspended, with a chance of reinstatement. One intern was deregistered, while four were cleared after investigations. Three cases were dropped after the accused passed away before hearings.

Over 470 Teachers Deregistered in Five Years

Anyuor further disclosed that TSC has deregistered 470 teachers over the past five years for various offences. The Commission insists it will continue to uphold discipline and protect learners.

“We must ensure our schools remain safe and professional,” Mitei emphasized.

Public Demands Transparency and Reform

Kenyans have reacted emotionally, demanding stricter vetting and better oversight in schools.

“Our children deserve safe learning environments. No compromise,” said a concerned parent.

As the education sector grapples with these revelations, the message from TSC is clear: misconduct will not be tolerated.
