William Ruto Says He Consulted Yoweri Museveni Before Naming Raila as Kenya’s AUC Candidate
President William Ruto has revealed he consulted Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni before endorsing Raila Odinga for the African Union Commission (AUC) chair position. Speaking during the Piny Luo Cultural Festival in Siaya County on January 2, Ruto underscored Museveni’s role as the East African region’s elder.
Why Museveni’s Advice Mattered
Ruto explained his decision to consult Museveni, citing the Ugandan leader’s stature as a respected regional elder.
“Before we rolled out his candidature, we met with Mzee Yoweri Museveni as the elder of the region and spoke to the others,” Ruto stated.
According to the president, this consultation ensured collective agreement among East African leaders.
Ruto expressed confidence in Raila’s capability to bring transformative leadership to the AUC. He emphasized that the region’s unity played a crucial role in presenting Raila as a strong candidate.
Museveni Hosts Ruto and Raila
In February 2024, Museveni hosted Ruto and Raila in Uganda. This meeting focused on strengthening diplomatic ties between Nairobi and Kampala, as well as fostering collaboration among the seven East African Community (EAC) member states.

During the discussions, Ruto floated the idea of a political federation to unite East African nations. He argued this would amplify the region’s influence on the global stage. Additionally, the leaders tackled critical issues affecting Kenya and Uganda, including energy and petroleum challenges.
Raila’s Vision for the AU Commission
Ruto revealed that Raila’s AUC candidacy was among the topics discussed during the Uganda meeting. Raila, in turn, has expressed confidence in his bid, banking on his extensive experience in governance and diplomacy. He believes this will help him secure votes from the heads of state and government during the AU Assembly elections.
With his history as Kenya’s prime minister and decades of political leadership, Raila aims to position Africa as a united and progressive continent. He has promised to lobby for policies that address key challenges facing African nations, including economic integration and peacebuilding.
Strengthening Regional Unity
Ruto’s decision to consult Museveni reflects his commitment to regional solidarity. By rallying East African leaders behind Raila, Ruto seeks to demonstrate the strength of a united front. However, critics argue that internal political differences in Kenya could cast a shadow on Raila’s candidature.

As the AUC elections approach, all eyes remain on Raila’s ability to secure the seat and on East Africa’s growing influence in continental affairs.
