US-Based Pastor Steps Down Following Church Invitation to President William Ruto

Nairobi, Kenya – A U.S.-based Kenyan pastor has announced his resignation from the Jesus Compassion Ministry (JCM) U.S. branch, citing concerns over the church’s decision to invite President William Ruto to its anniversary celebrations in Ruiru, Kiambu County.

Pastor Charles Wachira made the announcement on Sunday, February 22, through a statement posted on his social media pages. He explained that his decision was driven by conviction and a commitment to uphold spiritual leadership grounded in truth, righteousness, and the defence of innocent life.

“Spiritual leadership must stand firmly on truth, righteousness, and the defense of innocent life,” Wachira stated. “When leadership actions create confusion, division, or moral discomfort among believers, it becomes necessary to take a principled stand.”

Concerns Over Leadership Principles

Wachira expressed unease over recent public engagements by church leaders, which he said had disturbed many believers, particularly the youthful Gen Z. He argued that the church must not appear indifferent to the suffering of the people and should instead provide moral clarity during sensitive national moments.

“You have heard the growing calls for justice, accountability, and moral clarity. These cannot be ignored, especially by spiritual leaders who have a responsibility to speak for those who cannot speak for themselves,” he added.

The pastor referenced biblical teachings, warning against calling evil good and urging justice for the oppressed. He said his resignation was not an act of rebellion but a principled response to what he described as troubling leadership choices.

Invitation to President Ruto

His resignation followed the church’s invitation to President William Ruto to attend JCM’s third anniversary celebrations at its headquarters in Ruiru. The event was intended to mark the church’s growth and expansion, but the invitation sparked debate among members and observers about the intersection of faith and politics.

Wachira suggested that such invitations risk creating division within the church community, especially at a time when young believers are demanding accountability and transparency from leaders.

Broader Context

The pastor’s decision comes against the backdrop of heightened political tensions in Kenya, where opposition rallies and government responses have drawn sharp criticism from civil society and religious groups. Analysts note that churches have historically played a significant role in shaping public discourse, often serving as moral voices during periods of political uncertainty.

Wachira’s resignation highlights the growing pressure on religious institutions to balance their spiritual mission with political engagements. His statement reflects broader concerns among believers who fear that church leadership may be perceived as aligning too closely with political power.

Next Steps

While Wachira did not provide full details of his future plans, he indicated that he would share more information in due course. He emphasised that his decision was rooted in conviction and a desire to safeguard the integrity of spiritual leadership.

“This is about conviction, not rebellion. I will provide more information on my resignation, but for now, I stand by the principle that leadership must be accountable to truth and righteousness,” he affirmed.

Conclusion

Pastor Charles Wachira’s resignation from the Jesus Compassion Ministry U.S. branch underscores the growing debate over the role of religious institutions in political affairs. As the church prepares to host President Ruto in Ruiru, the pastor’s principled stand has sparked conversations about faith, accountability, and the responsibility of spiritual leaders to provide moral clarity in times of national tension.\
