Chaos in Murang’a: Police Fire Teargas, Bullets at Gachagua Allies During Church Visit

Tension gripped Murang’a County on Sunday, July 7, after police officers launched tear gas and fired live bullets at allies of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

The dramatic events unfolded shortly after Nyandarua Senator John Methu and several opposition leaders attended a church service at AIPCA Christ the King Church in Kahuro, Kigumo Constituency.

Although the service ended peacefully, chaos erupted as the convoy prepared to address public rallies nearby.

Police had erected a blockade on a major highway, barring the leaders from proceeding. In video footage seen by Kenyans.co.ke, Methu is seen trying to reason with a senior officer.

“What have we done? What is the problem with addressing the people?” Methu asked, visibly frustrated.

However, negotiations quickly turned chaotic. A teargas canister was hurled at Methu during the conversation, forcing him and his fellow leaders to flee for safety.

Unverified reports claimed that goons—allegedly hired—joined the police in attacking Methu’s convoy. Several vehicles suffered damages, with bullet holes visible.

In a strongly worded statement, Gachagua’s communication team condemned the violence.

“Armed police officers accompanied by goons have ambushed leaders allied to DCP Leader Rigathi Gachagua immediately after they left AIPCA Christ the King Church in Kahuro, Kigumo Constituency, Murang’a County,” the statement read.

“The police, jointly with goons, blocked the leaders’ convoy and started throwing teargas and live bullets. They dispersed the crowds and harassed the leaders, saying that they were not allowed to hold a meeting in the area,” the statement added.

Several individuals were injured, while others were left shaken by the unexpected brutality. The incident has sparked outrage across political divides.

This marks the second consecutive weekend Senator Methu has faced similar treatment. Just a week earlier, on July 20, police blocked Gachagua’s allies on the Nakuru-Nyahururu highway as they attempted to hold a rally in Subukia.

Earlier that day, the leaders had attended a church service at Subukia AIC, where they criticized the Kenya Kwanza administration.

With tensions rising and violence escalating, many now question the government’s tolerance for dissent. What began as a church visit ended in fear, tear gas, and live ammunition—leaving behind a trail of pain, broken windscreens, and bruised democracy.
