US Ambassador Marc Dillard Condemns Intimidation of Journalists in Kenya

The United States has strongly condemned the rising intimidation and harassment of journalists in Kenya. U.S. Ambassador Marc Dillard issued a powerful statement on Saturday, May 3, warning against attempts to silence the media.

Journalists Protect Democracy

Speaking boldly, Dillard emphasized the vital role journalists play in safeguarding democracy.

“By asking questions and holding those in power accountable, journalists play a vital role in protecting democracy,” he stated.

He stressed that, although officials may feel uncomfortable with media scrutiny, press freedom remains essential.

“Sometimes the media’s work makes officials, including me, uncomfortable, but even with that, I know their work isn’t invaluable,” Dillard remarked.

Strong Stand for Press Freedom

Marking World Press Freedom Day, the ambassador made it clear that the U.S. stands firmly with journalists.

“We oppose efforts to silence or censor journalists,” Dillard declared.
“And this World Press Freedom Day, as journalists face censorship and threats, the US embassy celebrates the value of a free press that tells the truth boldly.”

His message resonated deeply, as concerns grow over journalists’ safety in Kenya.

Rising Attacks on Journalists

Dillard’s comments come amid escalating threats and attacks on the press. Kenyan journalists are increasingly facing harassment, despite their rights being protected under the Constitution.

Just last month, on April 10, police allegedly attacked more than six journalists covering the arrest of former UDA Secretary General Cleophas Malala in Nakuru County. The shocking assault left several injured.

Victims included three Citizen TV reporters, two from KTN, and one from Inooro TV. The attack sparked outrage and calls for justice.

Arrests of BBC Filmmakers

Most recently, on the night of Friday, May 2, police raided a studio in Karen and arrested four filmmakers linked to the controversial BBC Africa documentary, Blood Parliament. The four were booked into various Nairobi police stations, raising fresh fears of state censorship.

US Reaffirms Commitment

Ambassador Dillard reassured Kenyans of the U.S. commitment to defend press freedom at all costs.

“A free press is the backbone of any democratic society,” Dillard emphasized.
“We will continue supporting the media’s right to report the truth without fear.”

His bold stance has drawn praise from rights groups and journalists nationwide, who have long battled intimidation and threats.

As pressure mounts, many now hope the government will act to protect press freedom more decisively.
