Govt Slams BBC Over ‘Blood Parliament’ Exposé, Apologizes to Victims’ Families

In a fiery press briefing held at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) on Tuesday, Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura launched a strong criticism against BBC’s Africa Eye. The backlash followed the release of Blood Parliament, a shocking documentary that aired on Monday.

“They Should Have Been Fair,” Says Mwaura

Mwaura accused the British broadcaster of bias and one-sided reporting.

“Those who did the exposé should have been fair; they should have sought the government side of the story for a fair representation,” he stated.

Despite this, the BBC maintains that it reached out to the government, including the National Police Service (NPS) and the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), prior to the release. This contradiction has fueled further debate and public interest.

Government Breaks Silence—But So Do the People

The government’s response came a day after Blood Parliament exposed chilling scenes and testimonies related to the Gen Z anti-government protests. The exposé sparked outrage across the country, especially among young people.

Although the documentary was set to be screened at Unseen Nairobi cinema on Monday night, it was abruptly cancelled. “A screening of BBC Africa Eye’s Blood Parliament in Kenya was cancelled due to pressure from the authorities,” a BBC spokesperson confirmed.

However, Kenyans refused to be silenced. Activists from Social Justice Travelling Theatre and the Kayole Community Justice Center pledged to screen the film in Kayole on April 30.

Government Apologizes, IPOA Steps In

Despite the criticism directed at BBC, the government also took a somber tone. Mwaura extended official condolences to families affected by the recent protests.

“We send our condolences to the families of the victims affected,” he said. “However, we want to say that IPOA is on the cases and doing a follow-up, having issued a statement on the same.”

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) had earlier assured the public that investigations into the protest deaths were ongoing.

Growing Pressure and Public Outrage

The exposé has intensified scrutiny on how the government handled the youth-led demonstrations. Meanwhile, citizens continue to demand justice, accountability, and transparency.

As tension simmers, the push for truth and justice seems far from over. The nation watches closely as institutions are forced to reckon with the weight of public anger—and loss.
