University of Nairobi Medical Students Protest Delayed Exam Results

Tension erupted on Tuesday, August 26, as medical students from the University of Nairobi (UoN) staged demonstrations at Kenyatta National Hospital. They demanded the release of their long-overdue examination results.

Students Cry Foul Over Delays

The protesters claimed their results were due in July. Yet, two months later, they had received no communication from the administration.

“We are anxious and frustrated. This is oppressive, and we cannot proceed without our results,” one student said.

The students insisted the delay was jeopardising their academic future. They cannot move to the next stage of study without the previous year’s results.

Academic Progress at Risk

Moreover, the students argued the issue went beyond delayed marks. They explained that several university policies now hang in the balance.

First, registering for supplementary exams is impossible without results. Second, efforts to secure hostel accommodation have collapsed.

According to them, UoN requires exam results for room applications. Therefore, hundreds of students are now stranded as the September reopening approaches.

Sponsors Threaten to Withdraw Support

Even worse, many students rely on sponsors to fund their education. Without official results, they cannot prove academic progress.

Some said their sponsors are considering withdrawing support because they cannot show evidence of advancement.

The protesters therefore accused the administration of negligence. They vowed to keep faculty offices closed until their grievances were addressed.

Long-Standing Challenge

Examination delays are not new at the University of Nairobi. Missing marks and bureaucratic bottlenecks have repeatedly disrupted learning.

Lecturers often handle large numbers of students, which further complicates timely processing of marks. But the medical students argued that such excuses no longer hold water.

Relief in Hostel Fees, But Tension Remains

Earlier this month, the university slashed hostel accommodation fees for the 2025/26 academic year by 50 percent.

Now, students will pay Ksh21,500 for a single room and Ksh15,500 for a double. The decision came after weeks of pressure and protests.

Yet despite this victory, students remain restless. They insist cheaper accommodation means nothing without exam results.

Students Promise More Action

As demonstrations continued, the students made their message clear.

“We will not sit back. Until results are released, offices will remain closed,” another student warned.

The stalemate now threatens to escalate as UoN reopens in September.

For many students, the uncertainty has become unbearable. And until the administration acts, the tension at UoN is unlikely to ease.
