Hunger Crisis Shuts Down Siaya School: Jera Mixed Closed Indefinitely After Students Protest Over Lack of Food
Chaos broke out at Jera Mixed Secondary School in Siaya County after students staged a protest, accusing the school administration of starving them and mismanaging funds. The school was closed indefinitely on Friday, July 18.
The situation escalated quickly as students, driven by hunger and frustration, took to the streets in peaceful protest.
“We have been observing around, and there is no food in this school,” one student told reporters.
Empty Plates and Empty Promises

“Why is there no food, yet we paid school fees just last week?” a visibly upset student asked.
To make matters worse, learners accused the principal of ignoring their cries and being absent most of the time.
“The principal isn’t listening to us. He has been lying to us every day during assembly. All we want is for him to go home,” another student lamented.
Dilapidated Dorms and Water Woes
The students further claimed that dormitories are crumbling and water is rarely available. For many, this protest wasn’t just about food—it was about dignity and survival.
The unrest caught the attention of local education officials. Ugenya Sub-County TSC Director Bernard Orwasa visited the school and ordered its immediate closure to allow time for investigations and a way forward.
“Go home and remain calm. Your concerns are being addressed,” he told the students.
KCSE Candidates Left Behind
Despite the closure, KCSE candidates were directed to stay behind and continue with mock exams and revision. They were assured that alternative arrangements would be made to ensure their safety and preparation.
Meanwhile, teachers and members of the local community appealed for calm and dialogue.
Ironically, this development comes shortly after Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba announced the release of KSh22 billion capitation funds for Term 2.
So, where did the money meant to feed these learners go?
That is the burning question Jera students, parents, and the nation are asking. As pressure mounts on the school’s leadership, Kenyans are demanding accountability, transparency, and immediate government intervention.
