Two Dead, Several Injured in Tragic Crash Along Nairobi-Mombasa Highway
A deadly accident has once again thrown families into mourning. Two people died while three others were injured in a horrific road crash on the busy Nairobi-Mombasa highway.
How the Tragedy Unfolded
The accident happened on Saturday, August 16, at Kwa Mautiiyo in Malili. Police reports indicate that a trailer rammed into an oncoming pick-up before smashing into another trailer heading in the same direction.
Athi River South Sub-County Police Commander David Kandie confirmed the incident.
“The accident occurred at around 7:30 am. Two victims died instantly,” Kandie stated.
He added that the dead included a trailer driver and a 25-year-old man seated at the back of the pick-up.

Survivors and Rescue Efforts
Three survivors sustained serious injuries. They were rushed to Machakos Level 5 Hospital. Doctors confirmed they are responding well to treatment.
Police officers quickly sealed off the accident scene. They later towed the wrecked pick-up to Kyumbi Police Station for further investigations.
Residents’ Dangerous Move
As chaos unfolded, locals rushed to the scene. They began siphoning spilt fuel from the trailers. However, alert officers acted swiftly to prevent a possible fire tragedy.
“We had to move in quickly and stop residents. Their actions could have led to another disaster,” an officer at the scene said.
A Deadly Month on Kenyan Roads
This crash adds to a disturbing trend. Earlier this month, 27 people lost their lives at the Coptic roundabout along the Kakamega-Kisumu highway.
Government Response
Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir has vowed action. Appearing before Parliament on August 14, he promised strict measures.
“We will overhaul the vehicle inspection process. Unroadworthy vehicles will not be allowed on our roads,” Chirchir declared.
He also revealed plans to build resting zones for long-distance truck drivers.
“Tired drivers on highways pose a serious risk. We must create safe spaces for them to rest,” he explained.
