Samson Cherargei Defends Raila Odinga’s Collaboration with Ruto: “He Shouldn’t Be in Opposition Forever
Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has come to the defense of Raila Odinga amid backlash over his collaboration with President William Ruto. The hashtag #RailaMustFall trended on X, with critics opposing Raila’s bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship. Many argued his alliance with the Kenya Kwanza government showed he was unfit to lead Africa.
Cherargei’s Fiery Response
Cherargei took to X to silence Raila’s critics, questioning their expectations of the former Prime Minister. “Kenyans on Twitter should give Raila a break! Where was it written that he should be in opposition politics forever?” Cherargei asked.
He noted Raila’s decades in opposition, arguing his shift toward working with the government is natural. “He has done it for over 40 years,” Cherargei emphasized, urging Kenyans to focus on other pressing issues.
Raila’s Pan-African Vision
Cherargei defended Raila’s bid for the AUC chairmanship, calling him a true Pan-Africanist. He highlighted Raila’s dedication to advancing African interests and his support for Ruto’s administration.
“He is on his way to becoming AUC chairperson because he is a true Pan-African and supports the government of H.E. Ruto. That’s the beef the sore losers of 2022 have against him,” Cherargei wrote.
Leadership Beyond Raila
The senator also suggested that opposition leadership should not rest solely on Raila. He proposed Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka as a potential figure to step into the role.
“Opposition is not a preserve of Tinga; others can do like Kalonzo & et al. It means they are poorly underperforming,” Cherargei argued.

Public Reaction
The debate has reignited conversations about Raila’s political legacy and his role in shaping Kenya’s future. Supporters hail his Pan-African vision, while critics demand accountability in his new alliance.
