Ruto Orders Crackdown on Protesters Who Attacked Police Officers During June 25 Protests
Speaking at State House, Nairobi, the President met with regional and county security bosses alongside National Government Administration Officers. He expressed deep concern over the emerging trend of violent mobs targeting law enforcers.
“We cannot have a country where criminals run after our policemen,” Ruto stated.
“If a policeman’s life is in danger, then how can our families be safe?”
“We cannot have a country where police officers are fleeing because their lives are in danger.”

“This trend must change,” he warned.
“The criminals who attacked our officers and destroyed property in the Wednesday mayhem will be held to account.”
“We will stand by every man and woman in uniform, and protect them as they discharge their duties.”
He insisted that a secure environment is the only way the country can progress.
Murkomen: Police Must Defend Themselves
He defended the police, saying they had every right to protect themselves.
“These were not ordinary protests,” he said.
“They were targeted attacks on officers and police stations, especially in select constituencies.”
Murkomen attracted criticism after he gave officers a controversial shoot-to-kill order if attacked at police stations.
“This gun you’ve been given here, I wasn’t given it, and you weren’t given it for decoration,” the CS told officers.
“If someone tries to come to the police station to take guns or to attack you, they want to take your life. Save yourself first.”
Growing Safety Concerns
According to the Interior Ministry, over 300 police officers and 100 civilians were injured in the June 25 protests. Several police stations were reportedly targeted in coordinated attacks.

“It is true that from yesterday’s protests there was a particular pattern,” Murkomen added.
“I suspect the burning of police stations was meant for the coup plotters to make a statement that there is no longer a country.”
The government has promised swift action against those behind the violence, promising to restore order and defend state institutions from criminal elements hiding behind civil unrest.
