Ruto Names Dr. Samier Muravvej as New Kenya Fisheries Service Boss

President William Ruto has appointed Dr. Samier Muravvej as the new non-executive Chairperson of the Kenya Fisheries Service. The appointment took effect on Friday, September 5, 2025, and will run for three years.

In his official notice, the Head of State said:
“In exercise of the powers conferred by section 11 (1) (a) of the Fisheries Management and Development Act, I, William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, appoint Dr. Samier Muravvej to be the non-executive Chairperson of the Kenya Fisheries Service, for a period of three years, with effect from the September 5, 2025.”

Who is Dr. Muravvej?

Dr. Muravvej is a dental surgeon, entrepreneur, and respected public health leader. He brings more than 20 years of experience in healthcare, technology, and real estate.

He previously chaired the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) Board after being appointed in February 2023. At KNH, he oversaw reforms before handing over to Abbas Gullet, who succeeded him at the nation’s largest public hospital.

His blend of medical expertise and leadership in business has earned him recognition as a reformer with a bold vision.

The Kenya Fisheries Service plays a vital role in food security, marine conservation, and economic growth. Many coastal communities rely heavily on fisheries for their livelihoods.

The announcement followed a string of state appointments made by the President in recent weeks.

Just days earlier, President Ruto unveiled a seven-member panel to oversee the recruitment of new officials for the National Land Commission (NLC). The current NLC board will complete its tenure on November 14, 2025.

The appointed panel includes Jasper Micheni Mbiuki, Peris Mang’ira, Electine Nasambu, Ann Mwangangi, Bibiana Rabuku Omalla, Nichola Letting, and Rehema Dida Jaldesa.

Reforms Continue

Kenyans have been closely watching the President’s latest moves, with many interpreting them as part of his broader plan to streamline state corporations.

“These appointments show the President is restructuring key institutions,” one political analyst noted.
