Former Governor Wycliffe Wangamati to Spend Night in Jail in Ksh70M Graft Case
On Monday, September 1, he honored the summons to the Integrity Centre. However, hours later, he was escorted to Kilimani Police Station to await arraignment on Tuesday, September 2.
EACC Confirms Charges
The anti-graft body confirmed it had secured approval from the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) to charge Wangamati and several of his associates.
EACC CEO Abdi Mohamud issued a strong statement last Friday.
“The accused named above are directed to present themselves at the EACC Headquarters, Integrity Centre, on Monday, 1st September 2025, at 8:00 am for processing and arraignment,” he said.
Wangamati is accused of embezzling KSh70 million in public funds during his single term between 2017 and 2022. More than ten other individuals, linked to questionable companies, were also summoned.

Wangamati Cries Foul
The former county chief, however, denied the accusations and linked them to politics.
“This is nothing but a political witch hunt. My detention is connected to 2027 Bungoma politics,” Wangamati claimed.
His remarks echoed growing tension in the county, where his allies insist the graft case is meant to silence him ahead of the next elections.
Bigger Net Cast by EACC
The investigation has also ensnared Bomet Governor Hillary Barchok, who is facing allegations of money laundering and illegal enrichment.
Barchok rushed to court in a bid to block his arrest but suffered a blow when the High Court declined to intervene.
Public Outcry Over Graft
Kenyans continue to express frustration over endless corruption scandals involving top county leaders. For many, the sight of governors being processed at Integrity Centre has become too familiar.
