Ruto Announces Major KDF Leadership Changes as Military Promotions and Appointments Take Effect
The changes, announced on Friday, June 5, follow recommendations submitted by the Defence Council and affect senior officers serving in the Kenya Army and the Kenya Air Force.
According to a statement released by the government, the appointments are aimed at enhancing leadership continuity, recognizing distinguished service, and ensuring that the military remains equipped to address emerging security challenges both within Kenya and across the wider region.

Before his latest promotion, Major General Nkoimo served as the General Officer Commanding (GOC) Central Command, where he oversaw military operations and strategic coordination in one of the country’s key defence regions.
Announcing the appointments, the government stated that the changes were part of normal military succession planning designed to maintain stability within the armed forces.
“President William Ruto, on the recommendation of the Defence Council chaired by Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya, has approved promotions, appointments and postings of Kenya Defence Forces officers,” the statement indicated.
The latest changes also saw Brigadier Mohamud Salah Farah appointed as the Deputy Commander of the Kenya Air Force, one of the country’s most critical military formations.
Farah previously served as the Base Commander at Laikipia Air Base, where he played a key role in overseeing air operations, training programmes, and strategic defence activities.

In another key promotion, Brigadier William Kamoiro has been elevated to the rank of Major General and appointed General Officer Commanding Central Command.
The position became vacant following Nkoimo’s elevation to Deputy Commander of the Kenya Army.
The appointment places Major General Kamoiro in charge of overseeing military operations, personnel management, and strategic security coordination within the command region.
Security experts note that periodic military restructuring is a standard practice in professional armed forces and helps ensure continuity in leadership while providing opportunities for career progression among officers.
The promotions are also expected to strengthen institutional memory within the military by ensuring experienced officers occupy key command positions.
The military remains actively involved in counterterrorism efforts, disaster response operations, infrastructure support projects, and peace support missions under regional and international frameworks.
“The appointments and promotions are intended to ensure effective command, enhance operational efficiency, and support the continued transformation of the Kenya Defence Forces,” the government said.

The appointments mark another significant milestone in the ongoing restructuring of the Kenya Defence Forces under President Ruto’s administration, with attention now turning to how the new leadership team will guide the military through an increasingly complex security environment.
