Ruto, CSs Mbadi, Ogamba, Joho Lead New State Appointments

President William Ruto and several Cabinet Secretaries have announced a fresh wave of appointments and reappointments across government agencies, universities, oversight boards and state corporations in a move expected to shape leadership in key public institutions over the next three years.

The appointments, published in a gazette notice dated Friday, May 22, involve senior positions in education, trade, mining, regional development, housing and public finance sectors.

Among the notable appointments, President Ruto re-appointed Ann Wambui Njuguna as the Non-Executive Chairperson of the Uwezo Fund Oversight Board for another three-year term beginning May 26.

The Head of State also renewed the term of Patrick Maina Muriuki as a Commissioner of the Advocates Complaints Commission, extending his stay in office for an additional three years.

The latest appointments come as the Kenya Kwanza administration continues restructuring boards and public institutions as part of wider reforms aimed at strengthening governance, accountability and service delivery.

At the National Treasury, Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi made several changes affecting financial oversight institutions.

Mbadi re-appointed Simon Mbugua as Chairperson of the Policyholders Compensation Fund Board and renewed the appointment of Diberious Shikuku Wafula as a board member for another three-year term.

At the same time, the Treasury CS revoked the appointment of Gabriel Kago Mukuha as a member of the National Government Constituencies Development Fund Board, effective immediately following publication of the gazette notice.

The Ministry of Education recorded the highest number of appointments in the latest government reshuffle, with Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba announcing fresh appointments and renewals across universities, technical institutions and education councils.

Among those re-appointed was Karuti Kanyinga, who retained his position as Chairperson of the Universities Fund Board of Trustees.

Naftali Omolo Ongati was also re-appointed Chairperson of the Maseno University Council.

Ogamba further appointed several new members to the Universities Fund Board of Trustees, including Conrad Keya, Fakira Kassim Sheik, Esther Sagini, Isaiah Kirukmet and Jackline Akinyi Jacoyange.

The Education CS also made major changes within university councils, appointing Peter Kiuluku as Chairperson of the Makueni University College council alongside new council members.

Waswa Dick was appointed to the Machakos University council as part of efforts to strengthen institutional governance in higher learning institutions.

Additional reappointments were made at Dedan Kimathi University of Technology, Meru University of Science and Technology, Laikipia University and the University of Eldoret.

Within the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) sector, Gideon Murenga was appointed to the council of the Kenya School of Technical and Vocational Education and Training.

Ahmed Issa and Josephat Karoki Mwaniki were also appointed to the councils of Kericho National Polytechnic and Meru National Polytechnic respectively.

Elsewhere, Lands Cabinet Secretary Alice Wahome appointed Weldon Maritim as Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Geographical Names alongside several committee members tasked with overseeing place-naming policies and geographical records.

Trade Cabinet Secretary Lee Kinyanjui also renewed the terms of three members serving on the board of the Kenya Export Promotion and Branding Agency.

Meanwhile, East African Community and Regional Development Cabinet Secretary Beatrice Askul appointed Engineer Michael Owino Ochieng to the board of the Lake Basin Development Authority.

Mining Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho also announced appointments to the Community Development Agreement Committee between the Orwa Community in West Pokot and Sebit Investment Limited.

Most of the appointments and reappointments will run for three-year terms, after which ministries will review performance and make fresh appointments where necessary.

The latest changes are expected to influence policy implementation, governance and oversight across several critical sectors within government institutions.
