Raila Endorses June 25 Protests but Urges Youths to Seek Permits First
Speaking during a groundbreaking ceremony in Mombasa on Tuesday, Raila emphasized that peaceful demonstrations are a constitutional right. However, he insisted that protesters must inform the authorities in advance.
“Article 37 of the Constitution says that every Kenyan has the right to peacefully picket, demonstrate, and present petitions to public authorities,” Raila stated.
“So if people want to demonstrate, they must submit a formal request to the police,” he added.
Youth Urged to Follow Due Process
Raila reminded the youth that order is crucial, especially when pushing for change. He advised that getting police clearance would help make their protests peaceful and impactful.

“Those who want to engage in protests must first inform the government and explain their intention of holding the protests,” he said.
“They must state the date and the duration of the demonstrations.”
Odinga emphasized that this approach is not new and has worked in other democratic nations.
“This is what happens in all the nations across the world,” Raila explained.
“The other day, you saw protests in Iran, London, Paris, India and even in America; they first informed the police.”
Blasts Government’s Attempt to Silence Protesters
Odinga did not hold back on the government’s attempt to shut down the planned demonstrations.
“Trying to stop the protests is not the best way to handle the issue,” he said.
His remarks come amid growing tension ahead of the demonstrations, which are set to mark one year since last year’s deadly protests

Government’s Position Sparks Outrage
On the other hand, the government has dismissed any plans for protests.
“There will be no demonstrations on June 25,” Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura stated on Monday.
“Anyone wishing to mark the day is free to do so at home.”
The conflicting positions have stirred mixed reactions, with many youths insisting they will not back down.

As Kenyans wait for Wednesday, the country holds its breath. Will voices be heard? Or will silence rule the day?
