ODM Defends Gen Z Protest Legacy, Slams ‘Betrayal’ Tag Ahead of June 25 Anniversary

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has issued a powerful call to action ahead of the June 25 commemoration of Gen Z protesters killed during last year’s anti-government demonstrations.

In a statement released Sunday, ODM urged the youth to “turn out in large numbers” and peacefully honour the young lives lost in the fight for justice and reform.

“We urge all those who will turn out to commemorate the anniversary this Wednesday to fearlessly stand on the side of freedom and democracy,” read part of the statement signed by ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna.

Party Hits Back at ‘Betrayal’ Claims

ODM didn’t stop at mobilisation—it launched a scathing response to The Standard newspaper over a recent headline calling Raila Odinga and activist Kasmuel McOure “Gen Z Betrayers.”

The party condemned the article as misleading and accused the media outlet of pushing a hidden political agenda.

“It is in really bad taste for The Standard to consistently run this false narrative,” the statement said.
“The leadership of ODM refuses to be intimidated or railroaded by partisan propaganda disguised as journalism.”

The party also emphasized that last year’s protests were driven by ordinary Kenyans—not politicians.

“These were spontaneous actions by youth demanding their rights. Supporting that does not equal betrayal.”

Clarifies Its Relationship with Government

While critics claim Raila Odinga’s recent cooperation with government officials signals alignment with Kenya Kwanza, ODM clarified its position.

“ODM is not part of the Kenya Kwanza government,” the party stated.
“Whatever stability frameworks we enter into are to sustain peace and democracy—not to join the government.”

Government Insists No Protests Allowed

Meanwhile, the state has doubled down on banning the planned protests.

Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura ruled out any form of street demonstrations on June 25.

“There will be no demonstrations. That day will be a normal day,” Mwaura said during a Monday morning radio show.
“Anyone who wishes to commemorate it is free to do so from home
.”

ODM Urges Unity Over Division

As emotions run high, ODM stressed the importance of peace and unity during this sensitive period.
