President Ruto Nominates Duncan Oburu as New KNCHR Chairperson in Bold Human Rights Move

President William Ruto has nominated legal scholar Duncan Oburu Ojwang as the new Chairperson of the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR), signaling a renewed push for human rights reform.

Speaker Moses Wetang’ula broke the news during a Tuesday afternoon parliamentary sitting.

“Duncan Oburu Ojwang has been nominated for appointment to the position of Chairperson of the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights by the President,” Wetang’ula told MPs.

The announcement sparked immediate interest, with leaders and rights groups eager to see what the seasoned law professor will bring to the influential role.

Vetting Begins as Parliament Races Against Time

Following the nomination, Speaker Wetang’ula confirmed he had forwarded Oburu’s documents to the Departmental Committee on Justice and Legal Affairs.

“The Speaker, Moses Masika Wetang’ula, has referred the curriculum vitae, the Report of the Selection Panel, and other testimonials of the nominee to the committee for vetting,” Parliament revealed.

The committee will now begin a rigorous approval process, inviting public participation and scrutiny before giving the green light.

If approved, Oburu will lead a commission tasked with protecting Kenyans’ rights, overseeing investigations, and advising the state on justice and equality.

Ruto’s Nominations Stir Political Buzz

This nomination follows closely after two others in the National Police Service Commission (NPSC) just a day earlier.

On Monday, President Ruto nominated Amani Yuda Komora as NPSC Chair and Angeline Yiamiton Siparo as a commission member.

“It is notified that His Excellency the President… has nominated the Chairperson and one member of the National Police Service Commission,” read part of the Monday notice.

Wetang’ula urged Parliament to act swiftly:

“With the House set to proceed on recess on August 15, I urge the Committee to commence the approval process immediately,” he stated.

“The Committee will now notify the nominees and the public of the date and venue for the approval hearings.”

What This Means for Kenya

Duncan Oburu, known for his sharp legal mind and deep understanding of constitutional law, may soon take on one of Kenya’s most sensitive positions.

His leadership could redefine how the country protects its most vulnerable citizens, especially as the KNCHR faces increasing pressure to be more proactive.

Kenyans now wait anxiously, watching whether Parliament will confirm the nominee before recess.
