Pathologist Links Premature Births and Physical Trauma to Deaths of Children Found in Kericho Mass Grave

Preliminary postmortem findings have revealed that most of the children whose bodies were recovered from a mass grave at Makaburini Cemetery in Kericho Town likely died due to complications associated with premature births, while a smaller number showed evidence of physical trauma.

Government pathologist Richard Njoroge announced the initial results on Thursday, March 26, after conducting examinations on 25 children at the Kericho County Hospital mortuary. The discovery has intensified public concern and prompted ongoing investigations into the circumstances under which the bodies were secretly buried.

“The bodies were in various stages of decomposition. Only a few were fresh, while the others were severely decomposed,” Njoroge told journalists, noting that the condition of the remains made it difficult to determine precise causes of death in several cases.

According to the pathologist, the recovered remains included both foetuses and full-term infants, indicating a wide range of developmental stages among the victims. Of the 25 children examined, eight were identified as male and ten as female, while the sex of seven could not be determined due to the advanced state of decomposition.

Medical analysis pointed to premature birth as the leading factor, accounting for ten of the deaths. However, four children displayed signs of head injuries, raising concerns that physical trauma may have contributed to or caused their deaths. In two cases, pathologists were unable to establish a cause of death.

“The findings show that the majority of these children were born prematurely, though a few exhibited injuries consistent with trauma,” Njoroge said, emphasizing that further laboratory tests may be required to clarify outstanding questions.

The mass grave was uncovered earlier this week at Makaburini Cemetery, where detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) exhumed a total of 32 bodies, including eight adults. The grim discovery has triggered widespread alarm across the country, with authorities seeking to determine whether the burials were conducted legally or if criminal activity was involved.

Investigators have already arrested a health official from Nyamira County Hospital and the cemetery caretaker in connection with the clandestine interments. Police believe the suspects may have played a role in facilitating the secret disposal of the bodies, though no formal charges had been announced at the time of reporting.

Officials indicated that postmortem examinations on the eight adult bodies recovered from the site were scheduled for Friday, March 27. Authorities hope the results will provide additional clues about the identities of the deceased and the circumstances surrounding their deaths.

Local leaders and human rights groups have called for transparency and accountability, urging the government to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure that families of the victims receive answers.

“This is a deeply disturbing discovery that demands a full and transparent inquiry,” one regional official said, reflecting the broader public sentiment.

The Kericho mass grave case now stands as one of the most troubling incidents in recent memory involving unexplained deaths and secret burials. As forensic teams continue their work, investigators face mounting pressure to establish whether the tragedy resulted from medical negligence, unlawful disposal of bodies, or more sinister causes.

Authorities have appealed to members of the public who may have lost infants or relatives under unclear circumstances to come forward, as efforts intensify to identify the victims and deliver justice.
