Exhumation at Kericho Cemetery Reveals 33 Bodies Including Minors

An ongoing exhumation exercise at a cemetery in Kericho County has uncovered 33 bodies — more than double the number initially suspected — in what authorities describe as a deeply troubling discovery that has sent shockwaves across the region.

Early reports had indicated that the site contained approximately 14 graves. However, updated findings from forensic teams now confirm a significantly higher number of remains, including a large proportion of children and teenagers.

According to officials involved in the operation, 25 of the recovered bodies are believed to be minors, while eight are adults. The revelation has heightened public anxiety as families and community members await clarity on the identities of the deceased and the circumstances surrounding their deaths.

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) began the exhumation earlier in the day under tight security, working alongside government pathologists and forensic experts.

The exercise is being supervised by the Director of Homicide, Martin Nyuguto, as well as a senior government pathologist representing Chief Government Pathologist Johansen Oduor.

As bodies were exhumed, medical experts conducted preliminary examinations at the site to determine possible causes of death, though officials cautioned that full autopsies and laboratory tests will be required before any definitive conclusions can be drawn.

Residents living near the cemetery described scenes of disbelief and anguish as investigators continued their work, with many expressing fears that the discovery could point to a major humanitarian or public health crisis.

The National Police Service confirmed that investigations were launched on Sunday, March 22, following reports of suspected mass graves at the location.

Preliminary findings indicate that the bodies may have been transferred from Nyamira District Referral Hospital after remaining unclaimed in the facility’s mortuary for an extended period. Authorities have not yet established whether proper burial procedures were followed.

While initial assessments have not conclusively pointed to foul play, investigators have detained two individuals to assist with inquiries — a public health officer attached to the Nyamira hospital and the cemetery caretaker. Both are being held for up to 30 days as detectives examine possible administrative failures or legal violations.

The case first came to light on Saturday when two grave diggers working at the cemetery reportedly stumbled upon the unusual burial site while carrying out routine duties. They immediately alerted authorities after noticing signs that multiple bodies had been interred in a manner they considered irregular.

According to their statements, the workers had earlier observed a group of unidentified individuals visiting the cemetery and holding discussions with the caretaker before departing. The interaction, they said, appeared suspicious and out of the ordinary.

Community leaders have since called for transparency and swift action to reassure the public.

Officials say DNA analysis may be required to identify the victims, particularly given the high number of minors involved. Authorities have also urged families with missing relatives to come forward to aid the identification process.

The discovery has raised broader questions about the management of unclaimed bodies in public health facilities, a challenge that has periodically surfaced in different parts of the country due to overcrowded morgues and limited burial resources.

As forensic examinations continue, authorities have appealed for calm, promising that a comprehensive report will be released once investigations are complete.

For now, the focus remains on establishing the identities of the deceased, determining how they came to be buried at the site, and ensuring that any violations of the law are addressed
