Chaos in Kericho: Four MCAs Suspended Over Stone Attack on Governor’s Office
Kericho County politics took a dramatic turn after four Members of County Assembly (MCAs) were suspended for allegedly stoning Governor Eric Mutai’s office. The shocking incident, captured on CCTV, unfolded on August 15 during the heated impeachment process against the governor.
“This Is Not Leadership”—Assembly Cracks Down on Rogue MCAs
The suspended MCAs include Kapsaos representative Paul Bii and nominated members Irene Chebet, Noela Opile, and Fancy Korir. CCTV footage showed them hurling stones and smashing windows at the governor’s office, located just 500 meters from the county assembly.

“These members threw stones and destroyed county assembly property,” said Majority Leader Philip Rono. “This is not good behaviour,” he added.
“Today, the committee was stabilising a report and disciplining members,” Rono explained. “Four have been suspended for 90 days,” he confirmed.
Impeachment Drama Sparks Violence
The chaos erupted amid Governor Mutai’s impeachment saga. On August 6, the county assembly accused him of misconduct, abuse of office, and constitutional violations. The motion passed, triggering a Senate trial.
“The threshold was not met. The governor stays,” a senator declared after the vote.
The Senate’s decision sparked outrage among some MCAs, leading to the violent protest.
Public Reacts With Shock and Disappointment
Kericho residents expressed disbelief over the incident. Many condemned the MCAs’ actions, calling for accountability and maturity in leadership.
“We elected leaders, not street fighters,” said a local trader. “This is shameful. They must face consequences,” she added.

Others urged the assembly to restore order and focus on service delivery.
“Let’s stop the drama and get back to work,” said a youth leader.
Governor Mutai Remains Defiant
Despite the turmoil, Governor Mutai remains in office. He has yet to comment publicly on the attack but continues to push forward with his development agenda.

As the dust settles, Kericho County watches closely. Will this suspension restore discipline—or deepen political divisions?
