Noisy Nightclubs Face Eviction from Residential Areas: Mosiria Declares Loud Crackdown

Nairobi County Chief Environment Officer, Geoffrey Mosiria, has dropped a bombshell on noisy establishments. From now on, nightclubs in residential areas won’t be asked to soundproof—they’ll be forced to relocate

“We shall continue to respond to all noise pollution complaints,” Mosiria said on Thursday, May 22.

But this time, he added, the county is taking a firmer stand. Instead of asking clubs to muffle the noise, Mosiria wants them completely removed from neighborhoods.

Why Soundproofing Is No Longer Enough

Although soundproofing helped before, Mosiria said the solution is no longer sustainable in residential zones.

“Soundproofing may help in the short term,” he noted.
“But it still exposes young children and the broader community to inappropriate behaviour and negative influences.”

According to him, this isn’t just about noise. It’s also about protecting community morals, especially for children who live near these clubs.

“We need a more sustainable approach. This includes relocating such establishments to properly zoned commercial areas or CBD alternatives,” Mosiria explained.

Mosiria’s War on Noise Pollution Intensifies

This move is just the latest in a series of crackdowns Mosiria has led. In recent months, he’s closed down clubs, including the once-popular Habanos, for noise violations.

“Kenyans must respect one another and promote safe, healthy living environments,” he emphasized.

Mosiria is also taking action in the CBD, where he previously warned loud electronic shops.

“Noise pollution from these establishments makes it hard for other businesses to operate,” he said.
“Some report health issues, including mental stress.”

The crackdown officially began on April 8, targeting shops with blaring music in the city center.

NEMA Also Cracks the Whip

Mosiria isn’t acting alone. The National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) has also stepped in. Speaking in Ruiru on February 15, NEMA’s Director of Compliance, Dr Ayub Macharia, said the authority will act swiftly.

“Any facility reported for causing noise pollution will face enforcement action,” Macharia declared.

He warned that such facilities must immediately stop their noisy operations. They must also conduct an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) with full public participation.

The Message Is Clear

Mosiria’s stance leaves no room for compromise. Nightclubs must choose between compliance and closure. Nairobi residents, especially families, have reason to hope for quieter nights ahead.
