Ndindi Nyoro Aligns With Opposition, Joins People’s Party of Kenya as Party Leader

Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro has announced his departure from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), saying he has joined the People’s Party of Kenya (PPK) and will work with opposition leaders ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Nyoro made the announcement during a media briefing at Safari Park Hotel in Nairobi on Monday, August 17, 2026, ending months of speculation over his political future.

The lawmaker said his decision followed nearly a year of consultations with political leaders across the opposition and other parts of the political spectrum.

“I want to be very direct. I, Ndindi Nyoro, from today, I have joined a party called People’s Party of Kenya.”

Nyoro said his political decision was guided by what he described as the need to put the interests of Kenyans ahead of individual political ambitions.

“I have been carrying a heavy burden. I have been thinking and praying that in whatever direction I take, politically speaking, the people of Kenya must be the great consideration that I have.”

Nyoro Names Opposition Leaders Consulted

The Kiharu MP revealed that he had held discussions with several opposition figures as he considered his next political move.

He named former Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya, People’s Liberation Party leader Martha Karua, Siaya Governor James Orengo, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka and former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i among those he had consulted.

“I have taken time to consult almost all the opposition leaders. I have sat down with Peter Munya, Martha Karua, and James Orengo. You know Sifuna is my brother. I have sat down with Rigathi Gachagua and Kalonzo Musyoka.”

Nyoro said the consultations had helped him assess the political landscape and determine the direction he wanted to take before the 2027 polls.

His announcement marks a major shift for a politician who was previously regarded as one of the prominent figures within President William Ruto’s political camp.

Plans Nationwide Political Tours

Following his move to PPK, Nyoro said he would immediately begin touring different parts of the country to explain his political position and engage voters.

He specifically identified Uasin Gishu, Kericho and Nandi as some of his initial destinations. The three counties are traditionally regarded as strongholds of Ruto’s political base.

Nyoro said the tours would allow him to explain his disagreements with the Kenya Kwanza administration and outline his political vision to voters.

He also announced plans to support candidates seeking elective positions under the People’s Party, including Members of County Assembly and Members of Parliament.

“People contesting for MCAs and MPs under the People’s Party, I will be offering them advice so that as we fight above there, we also have credible leaders in the wards and constituencies.”

Nyoro Opens PPK to Opposition Supporters

The MP also said members of other opposition parties would be welcome at PPK rallies as political parties prepare for the 2027 campaign.

His remarks suggest that the party intends to build a wider grassroots network by working with politicians and supporters from different political formations.

Nyoro’s departure from UDA comes at a time when Kenya’s political landscape is undergoing significant realignment ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Several political leaders have been holding consultations and exploring new alliances as President Ruto prepares to defend his presidency.

The opposition is also seeking to consolidate its support and identify a strategy for challenging the Kenya Kwanza administration.

Nyoro’s move therefore adds another layer to the emerging political contest, particularly in the vote-rich Mount Kenya region.

For now, the former UDA lawmaker is expected to focus on building the People’s Party of Kenya’s grassroots structures while engaging voters across the country.

His nationwide tours are likely to attract attention as political parties begin positioning themselves for what is expected to be a closely contested 2027 election.
