Gachagua Announces 45-Day Seclusion at Wamunyoro Residence to Plot Ruto’s Ouster

NAIROBI, Kenya — Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has unveiled a new political strategy that he says will focus on uniting opposition leaders behind a single presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 General Election, marking what could be a significant turning point in Kenya’s evolving political landscape.

Speaking shortly after the High Court upheld his impeachment on June 9, Gachagua declared that his immediate political mission would shift from public rallies and nationwide mobilization to intensive consultations aimed at forging opposition unity.

The former Deputy President revealed that after completing a planned political tour of Western Kenya, he would retreat to his Wamunyoro residence for 45 days to engage in extensive discussions with supporters, opinion leaders, religious figures, professionals, youth representatives, and political stakeholders.

According to Gachagua, the consultations are intended to develop a consensus formula for identifying a single opposition flag bearer capable of challenging President William Ruto in the August 2027 presidential election.

“My supporters have now instructed me urgently to embark on the implementation of our joint strategic stance from the Wamunyoro residence for a period of 45 days,” Gachagua announced.

“After a tour of Western Kenya, where I want to go and support my deputy party leader Cleophas Malala and Eugene Wamalwa over the weekend, from Monday I will be in Wamunyoro Village for 45 days to start exhaustive and extensive consultations with my supporters, opinion leaders and stakeholders on the formula of identifying a single presidential candidate to face President William Ruto,” he added.

The announcement comes at a time when opposition parties are increasingly exploring coalition arrangements and strategic partnerships aimed at presenting a united front in the next election cycle.

Gachagua indicated that the consultations would not only focus on identifying a candidate but also on determining the broader structure of cooperation among opposition leaders.

He disclosed that a 60-member advisory caucus comprising elders, clergy, professionals, youth leaders, and community representatives had recommended that he temporarily suspend large-scale political campaigns and concentrate on building consensus within the opposition movement.

According to the former Deputy President, his political team believes significant progress has already been made in mobilizing public support against the current administration and that the next phase should focus on leadership selection and coalition-building.

“I want to literally and firmly state to the people of Kenya that I remain committed to working with my colleagues in the United Alternative Government towards the cause of a single presidential flag bearer,” Gachagua stated.

The former Deputy President also maintained that he remains eligible to contest for the presidency despite the legal and political challenges arising from his impeachment.

He argued that legal processes related to the matter are still ongoing and that appellate avenues remain available.

Political observers view the announcement as a clear indication that opposition leaders are beginning to shift their attention from criticism of government policies toward preparations for the 2027 electoral contest.

Gachagua emphasized that opposition unity remains his primary objective, insisting that personal ambitions should not undermine efforts to build a formidable coalition.

He outlined two possible scenarios emerging from the consultations.

Under the first option, he said, he would seek nationwide support if coalition partners eventually agree that he should carry the opposition flag in 2027.

The second scenario would involve another opposition leader being selected as the coalition’s presidential candidate.

In that case, Gachagua pledged to fully support the chosen candidate and seek the endorsement of his supporters for the coalition’s decision.

“Unity within the opposition is non-negotiable,” he said, adding that the broader goal is to provide Kenyans with a strong and credible alternative leadership option.

He further pledged that should another candidate emerge as the coalition’s preferred choice, he would personally participate in nationwide campaigns and political mobilization efforts.

Gachagua expressed confidence that his political base would remain committed to the coalition’s objectives regardless of who ultimately secures the presidential ticket.

As the 2027 General Election draws closer, political analysts say the success of the opposition may largely depend on its ability to maintain cohesion and agree on a single candidate capable of consolidating support across different regions of the country.

The next 45 days at Wamunyoro could therefore prove crucial in shaping the future direction of Kenya’s opposition politics and the battle for State House in 2027.
