Nanam Ward in Mourning as MCA Philip Ekuwam Dies After Illness
Nanam Ward and the entire Turkana County have plunged into mourning following the untimely death of MCA Philip Ekuwam Lomuria. Ekuwam, a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) member, served as Deputy Speaker of the Turkana County Assembly.
The UDA party confirmed his passing through a heartfelt statement shared by Secretary-General Hassan Omar. The announcement triggered a wave of sorrow among colleagues, constituents, and fellow leaders.
UDA Confirms Loss of Loyal Legislator
“Until his death, Lomuria was a staunch and dedicated member of the UDA Party,” said Omar. “He exhibited zeal in undertaking his duties as a legislator at the County Assembly.”
Omar extended deep sympathies to the bereaved family. “As the family, the County Assembly, and the residents of Turkana County mourn their loved one and leader, the UDA Party sends its sincere condolences and stands in solidarity with them at this time of grief.”

A Leader Who Left a Mark
Turkana County Assembly Speaker Charles Ewoi confirmed that Ekuwam passed away while undergoing treatment at a local hospital. Although the specific cause of death remains undisclosed, Ewoi hinted at a period of illness.
“Philip was a dedicated and principled leader,” Ewoi remarked. “He served the people of Nanam Ward with distinction.”
Notably, Ekuwam was first elected in 2013. He served as Deputy Speaker during his first term and was re-elected in 2022. He resumed the same role and held it until his passing.
“His legacy of service, unity, and leadership will be remembered. We extend heartfelt condolences to his family, the people of Nanam Ward, and all who knew him,” the Speaker added.
Party Faces Another Loss
This loss marks yet another blow to the UDA party. On November 13, 2023, the party lost Murang’a nominated MCA Mark Wainaina under similar circumstances.
Wainaina had been battling a severe pulmonary disease. His lungs failed, and he succumbed while receiving intensive care.
President William Ruto mourned Wainaina, describing him as “a friendly and witty person with immense potential.”

A County in Reflection
Turkana now faces a leadership vacuum. Residents of Nanam Ward are left grieving a leader who, despite political noise, served quietly and effectively. His death underscores the fragility of life—even for public figures.
As tributes continue pouring in, many are asking: Who will fill the shoes of a man who gave so much?
