Sylvia Kemunto: Autopsy Confirms MMU Student Was Strangled to Death
NAIROBI – What was meant to be the beginning of a bright future for Sylvia Kemunto ended in tragedy.
On March 30, the 20-year-old Multimedia University student was found dead, her body stuffed into a rooftop water tank.
Days later, the truth emerged. Government pathologist Dr. Johansen Oduor confirmed the worst.
“Sylvia Kemunto was strangled to death,” he said.
She fought for her life. Her body showed defensive wounds, a heartbreaking sign that she tried to resist her killer.
Betrayed by Someone She Knew
Even more chilling, the suspect was not a stranger.
Her estranged boyfriend, Phillip Mutinda, also a first-year student at MMU, confessed to the crime.
He allegedly went to her room to seduce her. But when she resisted, things turned violent.
“We got into a confrontation. I pushed her, and she hit her head,” he said during interrogation.
He claimed he panicked after realizing she was unresponsive.
But instead of seeking help, he made a devastating choice.
A Calculated Cover-Up
Mutinda folded her body into a large suitcase. Then, he hid it in his room briefly.
Soon after, he dragged the suitcase to the rooftop and dumped Sylvia’s body into a water tank.
This act has shocked students, parents, and staff across the country.
The university community is grieving. Many are outraged and demanding justice.
“How could this happen in a place we thought was safe?” asked one student.
Campus in Mourning
MMU has remained quiet since the news broke.
Many students gathered for a candlelight vigil in Sylvia’s memory. Her classmates described her as bright, cheerful, and ambitious.
“She always smiled. She didn’t deserve this,” said a friend through tears.
Parents now fear for the safety of their children in university hostels.
“How many more daughters must die before real change happens?” asked a grieving mother.
