“I Was Buried Alive for 6 Hours”: Jared Nyakundi Recounts Kisii Building Collapse Horror
A Normal Morning Turns Into a Nightmare
However, by midmorning, his life nearly ended.
A building under construction crumbled, trapping Nyakundi and others in a nightmare of concrete, steel, and screams. Five people died. Several more were injured.
But somehow, Nyakundi survived.
“It Missed Me By Just a Little”
From his hospital bed, Nyakundi spoke in a trembling voice, recounting the horror.
“As the one above collapsed, it came down and covered me—right there where we were arranging the load,” he said.
“The bricks burst and fell down. It missed me by just a little. That’s where it stopped.”
A viral video shows rescuers pulling Nyakundi from the rubble. His eyes were barely open. He gasped for air. An oxygen mask clung to his battered face.
His body bore the pain of a man who had fought death and won.
Breathing Through Dust and Darkness
For six agonizing hours, Nyakundi lay buried under a second-floor slab. He found a tiny crevice to breathe through. That crevice became his lifeline.
Amid the chaos, he never lost hope. That determination may have saved his life.
“I kept calling for help. I warned a colleague nearby to stay away or he’d be trapped too,” he shared.
Warnings Ignored, Lives Lost
Just before the collapse, Nyakundi heard a chilling warning.
“There was someone who told the boss that a part of the top was shaking,” he recalled. “But he just said, ‘Let them park two up there.’ Shortly after that, the building collapsed.”
Those words now echo like a death sentence.
Authorities Confirm Prior Suspension
According to the National Construction Authority (NCA), this tragedy was preventable.
NCA Director Eng. Maurice Aketch confirmed that the site had already been suspended.
“The site was not registered. No contractor or consultant details were on record,” Aketch stated.
“A suspension order was issued on September 3, 2024, due to non-compliance. But the developer ignored it and resumed work without clearance.”

The building, located at Plot No. Wanjare/Bogiakumu/2138, was under developer John Chore, who is now on the run.
A Nation Demands Justice
As Jared recovers, a nation grieves and demands accountability. Many ask: How many more must die before safety is taken seriously?
This was no accident. It was a warning ignored, a system broken, and lives lost because of greed.
